 Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson was born in Indiana
on August 29, 1958 the seventh of nine children.
The self-proclaimed "King of Pop" grew
up in one of the most popular singing groups in
the 70s, became a legendary solo performer in the
80s, and metamorphosed into one of the most
controversial and freakish figures of the 90s.
Although controversy and rumors persist about
                Jackson "the man," Jackson "the
artist" can be considered a legend in the
field and a genius of musical creativity.
            At age
5, Jackson was the lead singer of his brother's
group, The Jackson 5. The group became huge in
1970 on the Motown label with several #1 hits on
pop and R&B radio. In the early 70s, Jackson
                also found solo success:

November 6: Jackson hit the Billboard

             August 10: Jackson's solo success
began to explode with the release of Off
The Wall. Jackson became one of the
few artists (at that time) to have 4 Top 10
singles from the same LP. The LP included 2 #1
hits, "Rock With You" and "Don't Stop
Till You Get Enough" as well as 2 more Top
10 hits: "Off The Wall" and "She's Out Of My Life." Off
The Wall eventually sold over 7 million
copies in the U.S. and was Jackson's first major
                collaboration with Quincy Jones.
            September 8: Jackson topped the
Billboard Soul Singles chart for 5 weeks with

Charts as the Top Hot 100 Singles Artist,

Artist (singles & albums), Top Soul Album (Off

& albums), Top Soul Album Artist, Top Soul
Album Artist - Male, Top Hot Soul Singles Artist,

November 13: Jackson teamed up with Paul
McCartney and hit ARC Weekly Top 40 with"The Girl Is Mine"November 27: Jackson hit the Top 10 with Paul
McCartney with "The Girl Is Mine."November 29: Jackson released his
landmark LP Thriller. The LP became legendary
and spawned a record 7 Top 10 hits, including the
#1 hits "Billie Jean," "Beat It," and "Thriller." Thriller spent the majority of 1983
at the top of the LP charts and into 1984 (a
total of 37 weeks at #1). Thriller sold over 51 million
copies worldwide (25 million in the U.S.) and is
the best-selling LP in history. Thriller also revolutionized the
concept of the music video. Jackson was the first
major black artist to appear regularly on MTV,
and pop/r&b music was now beginning to
replace MTV's devotion to heavy metal bands.
Jackson's videos were also presented as
mini-movies with dazzling and daring contents.
December 8: Jackson appeared on the
                cover of Rolling
                Stone.

McCartney with"Say Say Say." December 31: Jackson was named Rolling
                Stone
                magazine's #1 Artists of the Year (Reader's
                Poll).December 31: Jackson topped the Billboard 1983
Year-End Chart Toppers as the Top Pop Artist of
the Year, Top Pop Artist - Male, Top Pop Album
Artist, Top Pop Album Artist - Male, Top Pop
Singles Artist, Top Pop Singles Artist - Male,
Top Black Artist of the Year, Top Black Artist -
Male, Top Black Album Artist, Top Black Album
Artist - Male, Top Black Singles Artist, Top
Black Singles Artist - Male, Top Disco Artist,
Top Disco Artist - Male, and with the Top Pop
Album and Top Black Album (Thriller), and Top Disco/Dance
Single/Album ("Billie Jean/Beat It"). December 31: Thriller was the Top U.K.
                Album of the year.

February 22: Jackson won a Grammy Award for Best
Music Video, Short Form ("Leave Me
Alone") and was nominated for Best Music
                Video, Long Form (Moonwalker).
            March 7: Jackson topped the
Billboard Hot 100 Airplay chart for 2 weeks and
the Top R&B Singles chart for 2 weeks with
"Remember The Time."March 14: Jackson topped the
Billboard Dance Music 12" Singles Sales
chart for 5 weeks with "Remember The Time."
            August 15: Jackson topped the
Billboard Hot Dance Music Maxi-Singles Sales
chart for 4 weeks with "Jam."
May 8: Jackson hit the Top 10 with "Who Is It." May 22: Jackson topped the
Billboard Dance Music Maxi-Singles Sales chart
for 2 weeks and the Dance Music Club Play chart
for 1 week with "Who Is It."
            Jackson was accused
of child sexual molestation by a 13 year old boy
and the media focused directly on it. It was a
nightmare for the performer and in January, 1995,
Jackson settled out of court for approximately
$20 million. Instead of clearing the air of the
accusations, many feel that the settlement was an
                admission of guilt.

May 26: Jackson married Elvis Presley's daughter, Lisa Marie.
The overall consensus felt the marriage was a PR
attempt to revitalize Jackson's career. An
awkward kiss between the two at the MTV Music
Awards and a tame interview with Diane Sawyer on
TV would show the couple as loving only with
their halting comments, and seldom with their
body language. The marriage ended 18 months
                later.
            June: Controversy erupted with
the single "They Don't Care About Us" which contained
lyrics blatantly offensive to Jewish people.
Jackson apologized, tried to explain his reasons
for the lyrics, failed to appease anyone, and
released a re-vamped version of the lyrics on
future LP pressings. But when time came to record
the video for the song, Jackson chose to mouth
the original lyrics. The song was not a hit. June 3: Jackson hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with Janet Jackson with "Scream."June 14: Jackson sat down with his
wife and Diana Sawyer for an live interview.
Jackson addressed the child molestation claims by
saying: "Never, ever. I could never harm a
child, or anyone. It's not in my heart, it's not
who I am... and it's not what I'm.. I'm not even
interested in that." Jackson also stated:
"I have never invited anyone into my bed,
ever. Children love me, I love them. They follow
me, they want to be with me. But... anybody can
come in my bed, a child can come in my bed if
they want." June 16: Jackson released HIStory
Past Present & Future, a double LP with one disc
of hits. The LP contained the duet with sister Janet Jackson, "Scream" and the #1 hit "You Are Not Alone."June 17: Jackson hit the Top 10 with Janet Jackson with "Scream." June 24: Jackson topped the UK LP
chart for 1 week with HIStory
                Past Present & Future.
September 2: Jackson hit the Top 10 with "You Are Not Alone." September 2: Jackson topped the
Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart for 1 week, the
R&B Singles chart for 4 weeks, and the
R&B Singles Sales chart for 1 week with
"You Are Not Alone." September 7: The video for "Scream" won 3 MTV Video Music Awards for Best Dance Video, Choreography (Lavelle
Smith, Travis Payne, Tina Landon, & Sean
Cheeseman), and Best Art Direction (Tom Foden), and was
nominated for Video of the Year, Best R&B Video, Breakthrough Video, Best Direction, Best Special Effects, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, and Viewer's Choice.September 9: Jackson hit #1 for 2 weeks on the ARC Weekly Top 40 with
"You Are Not Alone." September 9: Jackson topped the UK
singles chart for 2 weeks with "You Are Not Alone." September 16: Jackson topped the
Billboard Rhythmic Top 40 chart for 1 week with
                "You Are Not Alone."
May 3: Jackson topped the UK
singles chart for 1 week with "Blood On The Dance Floor." May 11: Jackson released a dance
remix LP with some new tunes, Blood
On The Dance Floor - History In The Mix. There was not elaborate
hype to support the LP's release, and the LP was
a major disappointment in sales in the U.S. - not
reaching platinum status. Several factors were
hypothesized: are dance remix LPs ever
successful? should there have been more
pre-release hype? was the material just thrown
together? does America no longer support
Jackson's claims of innocence? or is the U.S.
just tired of the "King Of Pop"?
Jackson did have some success overseas with the
singles "Blood On The Dance Floor" and "Stranger
In Moscow." May 24: Jackson topped the UK LP
chart for 2 weeks with Blood
On The Dance Floor - History In The Mix.
            August: A mental patient who
escaped from a hospital reported attempted to set
fire to a stage where Jackson was to perform in
Finland. The man was caught after allegedly
pouring gasoline on the stage and as he was ready
to light the structure. The concert went on as
scheduled after it was determined the man acted
                alone.
            September: In a rare interview,
                Jackson talked with 20/20's Barbara
Walters about the recent death of Princess Diana
                and subsequent controversy over paparazzi.
Jackson stated, "I've been running for my
life like that..." referring to the recent
death of Princess Diana. Jackson cancelled his
concert appearance the night of the news, and
dedicated his next two concert performances to
Princess Diana. Jackson said he heard of Princess
Diana's death when "...my doctor gave me the
news... and I fell back down in grief ... and I
started to cry." Jackson also stated that he
had a feeling another death was also coming soon,
and he feared it would be him: "I said,
'There's another one... real soon... I feel it
                coming ... there's another one ... it's another
one coming and I pray it's not me... please don't
let it be me'" Jackson also stated that he
sold his own pictures of his son to tabloids to
thwart other's efforts to obtain pictures and to
stop others from profiting from fake photos:
"There were some illegal pictures out...
someone had taken pictures of a baby for millions
of dollars and said 'here's Michael's son'... so
I took pictures of the baby" (and received
over $3 million from various tabloids including
the National Enquirer. Most likely, the
                money was donated to charity).

             January: Jackson found some good
news relating to a court case that has been
plaguing him since 1992. The suit was filed in
Italy by a singer claiming Jackson's "Will You Be There" was actually a
version of his song, "Swans Of Balaka."
Jackson testified in his own defense last year.
This January, judges ruled in favor of Jackson.
            February: It was discovered that
Jackson, a long-time fan of the animated
television show The Simpsons, wrote the
hit song "Do The Bartman" for The
Simpsons' 1991 CD The Simpsons Sing The Blues.
                February: It was also reported
during the month that Jackson may find a legal
fight in his future again. Jackson still owns the
rights to some Beatles songs and may be talking
business with Volkswagen to use some of these
songs for an ad campaign. If it happens, look for
the 3 remaining Beatles to put up a fight against
him. A source from the Apple Records stated:
"The 3 of them categorically refuse to let
the songs be used for (advertisements) but the
trouble with Jackson is he has just ignored them
                in the past."
            April: Jackson became a father
once again. His wife, Debbie Rowe, gave birth to
a baby girl, Paris Michael Katherine Jackson in
Beverly Hills. A week later, Jackson received
more good news when he won a slander suit against
a free-lance writer who had told Hard Copy
that he had a video of Jackson and a 13 year-old
boy having sex. Jackson was awarded $2.7 million
and his lawyer said "...jurors told us that
they not only wanted to compensate Mr. Jackson...
but to send a message that they are tired of
tabloids lying about celebrities for money."
            November: Jackson won a lawsuit
against the U.K.'s Mirror who had ran a
pictorial story in '92 representing Jackson as
                "horribly disfigured" by plastic
surgery. The details about Jackson's settlement
with a young boy's family alleging sexual
misconduct were reported by The New York Post
to the tune of $18 million.

            May: Jackson was fined over
$2,000 by an Italian judge who ruled that he
plagiarized his hit "Will You Be There." In November, he was
                found innocent of plagiarism.

March 19: Michael was inducted into
the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a solo
                artist.
             September: Jackson celebrated 30
years in the music business as a solo artist with
a party/concert in New York City's Madison Square
Garden that included his brothers and many
                performers.September: Jackson announced he
would do his part to help the families of the
victims from the terrorist attacks on September
11th, by gathering recording artists to record a
fund-raising single which he wrote called
"What More Can I Give." Jackson stated:
"I believe in my heart that the music
community will come together as one and rally to
the aid of thousands of innocent victims. There
is a tremendous need for relief dollars right now
and through this effort each one of us can play
an immediate role in helping comfort so many
people."September 8: Jackson hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "You Rock My World."
             October: Jackson performed in a
Washington, DC concert benefiting the 9/11 attack
victims.October 6: Jackson hit the Top 10 with "You Rock My World."October 30: Jackson released his next
LP - Invincible. The LP is said to have
cost about $30 million to make.
            June: Jackson was inducted into
the Songwriters Hall of Fame.June: Jackson hired lawyer,
Johnnie Cochran, and Rev. Al Sharpton and
appeared at a press conference to place blame on
Sony Records for the poor sales of Invincible. The trio formed an
                'artist-rights initiative' and condemned the
music industry and his label, Sony Music, in a
                released statement. Jackson stated: "Record
companies have to start treating their artists
with respect, honor, and financial justice.
Therefore, I am proud to join this coalition
                which represents all artists."
            July: Jackson upped his attacks
against the music industry and more specially his
record label by lashing out at the music
industry's treatment of black artists. Sony
referred to the comments as "hurtful"
and for the most part were baffled by the
                statements.
September 6: Jackson made a surprise
appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards and was presented with a
                birthday cake by Britney
Spears who called him "the artist of
the millennium." Jackson then went on to
thank many people for the award (holding a stage
prop) even though MTV stated "no such award
                exists."
            November: Jackson appeared in a
California courtroom as a 'hostile witness' for a
breach of contract lawsuit of $21 million over 2
cancelled concerts that were to be held New
Year's Eve in 1999. Press was more focused on the
                bizarreness of Jackson's appearance, odd
testimony, and late appearance during the 3 days
                of testimony.November: Jackson further confused
spectators while in Germany he appeared on the
balcony of his 4th floor hotel window dangling a
baby over the railing for a few seconds while
smiling down on reporters and the crowd.

             January: Jackson talked with a
British journalist about a number of issues
including his latest son ("I used a
surrogate mother and my own sperm cells. She
doesn't know me and I don't know her"), his
'baby dangling incident ("I would never do
that to my children, or any child. We were waving
to thousands of fans down below and they were
chanting they wanted to see my child, so I was
kind enough to let them see. They got the full
experience and he enjoyed it"), questions
surrounding facial surgeries and 2 admitted
operations on his nose ("...it helped me
breathe better so I can hit higher notes"),
and his friendships with children ("I have
slept in a bed with many children. When you say
'bed' you're thinking sexual. It's not sexual,
we're going to sleep, I tuck them in... it's very
                charming, it's very sweet."
            March: A lawsuit against Jackson
filed by a German concert promoter ended with a
$5.3 million judgment against Jackson. The suit
was a result of canceled millennium concerts.
            May: Jackson was hospitalized
briefly prior to appearing in court for another
lawsuit (this one over the Jackson 5 name).
             November 18: Another collection of
Jackson's hits was released - Number
                Ones
which included a new track "One More
                Chance."November 18: Police went to Jackson's
Neverland Ranch with a search warrant. The search
was prompted by allegations of sexual misconduct
made by a 12 year-old boy from Los Angeles.
Jackson wasn't home at the time of the search. By
the morning of the 20th, an arrest warrant was
issued for Jackson and later in the day Jackson
surrendered to authorities and was booked on
suspicion of child molestation. After being
                handcuffed, booked and fingerprinted, Jackson
surrendered his passport and was freed on $3
million bond. Jackson maintained his innocence
and outrage at the charge through a statement. November 23: Jackson topped the UK LP
chart for 2 weeks with Number
                Ones.
            December 16: Number
                Ones
was certified gold.December 18: Jackson was formally
charged with 7 counts of child molestation along
with 2 counts of administering an intoxicating
substance to a minor for purposes of committing a
                crime.

             January: Jackson pleaded innocent
to charges of child molestation in a California
court room and was also warned by the judge for
arriving late.January 24: Jackson topped the
Billboard Internet Album chart with Number
                Ones.

             February: Jackson's
                child-molestation trial began.
June 5: After a 4 month trial for
child molestation, Jackson was found not guilty
                on all 10 charges.

June 25: Jackson died at the age
of 50 after suffering cardiac arrest.

            June 11: Jackson topped the
Billboard Dance Club Play Songs chart for 1 week
                with "Hollywood Tonight."
November 21: Immortal was released. The
compilation included remix songs for the Cirque
                du Soleil show.

            November 18: Thriller
                40
was released with the addition of bonus material
