ON THE NET:
Janet Jackson
|

Janet Jackson was born on
May 16, 1966 in Gary, Indiana, as the youngest of
the famous, musical Jackson family. Over the
course of the 80s, she has emerged as the most
respected talent of her family for the 90s. Janet
has attained world-wide superstar status with her
dance moves and music - always keeping up with
trends and never selling out to the "safe
pop sound." Janet first tried out her
showbiz talents in Las Vegas opening up for her
brothers. By age 7, Janet was singing and dancing
on TV specials with her brothers. But it was her
acting in various sitcoms (Good
Times
(1977-79), Diff'rent
Strokes (1981-82), and Fame) that first found her some
success. Janet was actually hand-picked by TV
mogul Norman Lear to appear in Good
Times.
At age 16, Janet was coerced into the music
industry by her father and signed to A&M
Records.

September 21: Janet's debut LP, Janet
Jackson, was released and showed little
success. Janet had a some airplay with the
singles "Say You Do," "Young
Love," and "Come Give Your Love To
Me."

- Janet's first move to
veer away from family wishes came with her
short-lived marriage to James DeBarge of DeBarge
at age 18. But bad moments became common as her
marriage dissolved over her husband's reported
drug use and with her disappointment over being
the only Jackson family member not asked to
participate in "We Are The World."

- Janet's marriage was
annulled and her career needed revamping.
Powerhouse producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis
were brought in to work with Janet, and through
their efforts to bring out the real Janet, she
was able to proclaim her talents.

Billboard Top Pop Albums chart for 2 weeks with Control.

hits "If," "Because Of Love," "Any Time, Any Place," and "Again" as well as her biggest
charting single, "That's The Way Love Goes" which topped charts
for 8 weeks. Other hits included "You Want This" and
"Throb." The LP was Janet's exploration
of sensuality and self-identity. janet. touches all aspects of
music including pop, rock, jazz, rap, hip-hop,
and even opera, and includes guests such as opera

homosexuality, and sexuality.
- October 7: Janet's next LP released,
The
Velvet Rope, had Janet exploring her own
childhood issues and adult pressures. She stated:
"It was really hard for me to make this
album. A lot of the songs were really difficult,
not so much to write, but to sing, because it
hits so close to home." On "Free
Xone," Janet confronts the issue of
homophobia: "I'm just tired of it. I have
friends who are having a difficult time coming
out. They're playing different characters with
different people and not being themselves."

lost to AIDS and "What About" which
confronts domestic abuse.
- October 25: Janet topped the

get up sometimes. There were times when I felt
very hopeless, and I felt like walls were kind of
closing in on me." The depression also
affected her latest LP which took twice as long
to finish. Janet also stated that part of her
treatment for getting over her depression was in
the form of coffee enemas, which she told Newsweek,
helped get rid of the "sad cells" in
her body.
- November 1: Janet hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "Together Again." "Together Again" was Janet's anthem
for people suffering with AIDS, as well as for
their families and friends. Janet has stated:
" I believe we have other lives. I don't
believe in the finality of death. I wanted to
write about friends who have died of AIDS, but
without being mournful or sad. I wanted to
celebrate their spirit. I'm pleased that 'Together Again' is just that -- a
celebration, a confirmation that the energy of
love will never die." The recipient of the
donated profits will be AmFAR: the American
Foundation for AIDS Research.

the events of Sept. 11 have troubled me
enormously and I remain concerned about the
foreseeable future. If anything happened to
anyone on this tour, I could never forgive
myself."
February 1: Janet performed at the
Half-time Show for Super Bowl XXXVIII. Near the
end of the performance, Janet helped out Justin
Timberlake on "Rock Your
Body" - at the end of the song, Timberlake

costume, resulting in Janet flashing a breast to
over 90 million viewers on live TV. Controversy
over the move soon erupted with the NFL and CBS
being outraged at MTV (who produced the segment)
and the performers. The question was - was it
intentional or a mistake. Janet released a
statement the following day: "The decision
to have a costume reveal at the end of my
halftime show performance was made after final
rehearsals. MTV was completely unaware of it. It
