- Lionel Richie was born on
June 20, 1949 in Tuskegee, Alabama. Richie began
his music career in the 60s before joining The Commodores in 1968. Richie was
credited with writing many of their greatest hits
and was songwriting for other artists by the end
of the 70s. In 1982, Richie went solo.
- April 7: Richie topped the
Billboard Adult Contemporary chart for 6 weeks
with "Hello."
- June 2: Richie topped the
Billboard Black Singles chart for 2 weeks with
"Hello."
- December 31: Richie topped the Billboard Year-End
Chart-Toppers as the Top Pop Artist of the Year,

- February 25: Richie topped the
Billboard Singles Sales chart with help from Shania Twain on the remake of
"Endless Love."
- April 14: Richie topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 2 weeks, Digital
Albums chart for 1 week, and Country Albums chart
for 4 weeks with Tuskegee.
- April 27: Tuskegee was certified gold.
- March 11: Richie appeared as a
judge on the revamped ABC version of American
Idol.
