TIMELINE

Barbra Streisandbutton.gif (123 bytes) Barbra (Joan) Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. For the past 4 decades, Barbra has become a legend of music and continues to be one of the most acclaimed performers of all-time. Barbra has also been at the forefront of many musical events and has opened the doors for many female artists who came after her. Barbra was the first performer to win an Oscar, Emmy, Tony and Grammy Award (all by 1970) and has won a total of 2 Academy Awards, 10 Grammy Awards, 4 Emmy Awards, 1 Tony Award, and 10 Golden Globe Awards. As a teenager, Barbra dropped the "A" from her name (Barbara) and began entering talent contests which led to performances at local clubs and struggling as an actress. By the time she was 20, the music industry had found Barbra and she signed with Columbia Records in 1962. Barbra also landed the part of Miss Marmelstein in the Broadway musical, I Can Get It For You Wholesale for which she won the New York Drama Critics Award and received her first Tony nomination. The show also starred Barbra's future husband, Elliot Gould (married 1963-1971).
