"I
missed my family and my home, but I don't
regret having lost my adolescence. I had one
dream: I wanted to be a singer." - Celine
Dion
TIMELINE
Celine Dion was born the
youngest of 14 children in Quebec on March 30,
1968. Although she was a famous musical voice in
Canada and France since her teens, she didn't
crack the U.S. charts until her early twenties in
1991 when she released an LP in English. The Top
10 song that broke through with American
audiences was "Where Does My Heart Beat Now." Since that American
breakthrough, Celine has risen to worldwide
superstar status with a string of hits on pop and
adult contemporary radio. Celine began singing
when she was 5 and had recorded her first demo
("Ce N'etait Qu'un Reve" or "It
Was Only A Dream") by the time she was 12
years old. Two years later, Celine was wining
contests, recording singles, working with Rene
Angelil, and had become a star in Quebec. Her
only obstacle for success beyond Canada and
France was her French lyrics. By the late 80s,
Celine had learned English and signed a deal with
Sony Records.
March 3: Celine won 2 Juno Awards
for Album of the Year (Unison) and Female Vocalist of
the Year, and a MuchMusic Award for Best MOR
Video ("Can't Live Without You, Can't Live
Without You (with Billy Newton Davis)).
December 17: Celine married Rene
Angelil, her manager since her preteens. Angelil,
who is 26 years older than Celine, began his
relationship with her when she was 19.
March 10: Celine won a Juno Award
for Best-Selling Francophone Album (D'eux). Other honors during the
year included an Irish Recorded Music Award for
Best International Female Singer, a World Music
Award for Best-Selling Canadian Singer, Female,
and was named VH1's Artist of the Year.
March 9: Celine won 4 Juno Awards
for Best-Selling Foreign or Domestic Album (Falling
Into You), Best-Selling French-Speaking
Album (Live A Paris), Female Vocalist of
the Year, and the International Achievement
Award.
November 22: Celine hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "My Heart Will Go On" from the film Titanic. The song almost didn't
make it on the soundtrack to Titanic. Originally, the movie's
director James Cameron was against a song with
vocals for the film. His composer, James Horner,
felt differently and secretly had Dion record the
song. Eventually, Cameron was made privy to the
recording, and the song was included on the
soundtrack and the film's closing credits.
May 1: Celine was made an
officer in the Order of Canada. The honor is
bestowed on those who demonstrate "the
highest qualities of citizenship... (with
contributions that) enrich the lives of their
contemporaries."
November: Celine could be seen
guest starring in Touched By An Angel on
CBS and performing live in a CBS special.
November: Celine started talking
about semi-retirement - taking time off for
motherhood and "a normal life." Her
husband, Rene, said Celine is planning a New
Years Eve concert in '99 after which she'll take
a break from performing and possibly starting a
family and/or a film. Celine stated: "I'm
only 30 years old but I live somebody who's 56...
I don't feel like going on like this for another
10 years because Rene won't be there forever,
unfortunately."
November: Celine sued a French
tabloid newspaper that implied in an article that
she was unable to have a child. Celine and her
husband are suing for $17,500 each in damages.
December 31: Celine's LP, Let's
Talk About Love, was the 2nd biggest-selling LP of
1998 (topped only by the Titanic soundtrack) with 5.9
million copies sold in the U.S.
December 31: Celine topped the Billboard Year-End
Charts as the Top Billboard 200 Album
Artist, Top Billboard 200 Album Artist - Female,
Top Hot Adult Contemporary Artist, and with the
Top Soundtrack Single ("My Heart Will Go On").
April: It was announced that
Celine would postpone several of her concerts in
April and May due to her husband's recovery from
surgery for skin cancer. She stated: "Rene
is the biggest priority in my life and I want to
be at his side as he continues his
treatment."
October: Dion had to defend
herself against a lawsuit by a former drummer
claiming that she lip-synced during many live
performances.
December 31: Celine ended her year
with a New Year's Eve concert in Quebec - her
last concert performance for the next few years -
"...at least 2 years, maybe 2 and a half,
maybe 3..." to spend time with her husband
and possibly start a family. Dion said
"...we are going to go for picnics. We are
going to try to have a child. We want to be there
for each other."
January: Celine was listed on the
infamous yearly "Worst Dressed Women"
list and described as "a profusion of
confusion."
February: Celine filed a lawsuit
against the National Enquirer for $20
million for a story they ran claiming she was
pregnant with twins. She said of the story:
"I am deeply affected by this story. Since
the publication of the news article, everybody is
congratulating me and I have to endlessly repeat
that it is not true. This is my deepest wish and
I hope one day it will materialize."
March 12: Celine was nominated for
3 Juno Awards for Best Album and Best-Selling
Album (foreign or domestic) (These
Are Special Times), and Best Female Artist.
June: Celine confirmed that her
visits to a fertility clinic in New York paid off
and she is now pregnant, stating: "There's
no hiding happiness. We can't keep something so
big, so wonderful a secret for us. This time it's
for real... I'm pregnant."
October 24: Celine released Volume
1 - Collector's Series - which contained some
hits and included the song Celine performed at
the Opening Ceremony of the 1996 Olympic Games in
Atlanta ("The Power Of The Dream").
September 21: Celine performed
"God Bless America" for a landmark
fundraiser (America:
A Tribute To Heroes) aired by all the major networks to
raise money for families of the victims of recent
terrorist attacks.
April 13: Celine topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week and Top
Internet Albums chart for 3 weeks with A
New Day Has Come. The LP sold over 527,000 copies in
the US its first week of release.
July 2: Celine sent a taped
performance to Ontario, Canada as part of the
worldwide Live 8 concerts. The mission of
the concerts was to raise awareness of the
on-going poverty in Africa and to pressure the G8
leaders to take action by doubling aid, canceling
debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa.
May 7: Celine could be heard on
the tribute compilation for Italian film composer
Ennio Morricone, We
All Love Ennio Morricone, with the track "I
Knew I Loved You."
May 28: Celine released the
French LP D'Elles overseas.
August: Celine announced she
would cancel her Las Vegas residency and a
planned tour of Asia to focus on her husband's
health. Her husband had a cancerous tumor removed
from in throat last December.
Celine returned to
Las Vegas in late summer to Caesars Palace to
resume her appearances after taking time off to
focus on her ailing husband.
January 14: Celine's husband Rene
died from cancer at the age of 73.
December 8: Celine revealed that she
was diagnosed with the rare stiff-person syndrome
and postponed dates for her tour. The condition
results in muscle spasms and rigidity in the
torso and limbs.
