TIMELINE
Britney Jean Spears was born in
Mississippi on December 2, 1981 and raised in
Louisiana. Her first bought with fame came at the
age of 11 with the Mickey Mouse Club as a cast
member of The
New Mickey Mouse Club (Britney had been turned
down 3 years earlier because she was too young).
For a short time Britney joined the female group
'Innosense.' From there, Britney took her solo
talents to the pop charts with a smash debut LP.
Although Britney has never been noted for her
singing voice, her fame rose as her provocative
and controversial performances led her from teen
pop star to young female vocalist. Tabloids
followed her every move including a rocky
marriage, questions of substance abuse, and
erratic behaviors.
October 31: Britney hit the Top 40
for the first time with "...Baby One More Time." The song topped the
singles charts in Australia, Austria, Belgium,
Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany,
Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway,
Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.
January 12: Britney released her
debut LP Baby
One More Time (available for download at iTunes and Amazon-mp3). Rolling Stone
magazine said of the LP "...while several
Cherion-crafted kiddie-funk jams serve up beefy
hooks, shameless schlock slowies, like
"E-Mail My Heart," are pure spam."
January 30: Britney topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 6 non-consecutive
weeks with Baby
One More Time. The LP sold over 120,000 copies
its first week of release in the US. Baby
One More Timeeventually sold over 25
million copies worldwide and also the charts in
Canada, Germany, Mexico, and Switzerland, and hit
the Top 10 in Australia, Austria, Belgium,
Finland, France, Holland, Hungary, Ireland,
Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway,
Sweden, and the UK. With Baby
One More Time, Britney held the record for having
the biggest selling LP by a teenager and biggest
selling debut LP for a female.
April 15: Britney appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone and suggestive
photos resulted in Britney's camp having to deny
rumors of the 17 year old getting breast
implants.
May 15: Britney hit the Top 40
with "Sometimes." The song topped the
singles charts in Belgium, the Netherlands, and
New Zealand.
December 31: Britney topped the Billboard Year-End
Chart-Toppers as the Top Pop Artist - Female
(singles & albums), Top New Pop Artist, Top
Billboard 200 Album Artist - Female, and Top Hot
100 Singles Artist - Female.
April: Britney won a Kids'
Choice Award for Favorite Female Singer.
April 15: Britney hit the Top 40
with "Oops!... I Did It Again." The single topped
the singles charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada,
Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand,
Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.
May 16: Britney released Oops...
I Did It Again(available for download at
iTunes and Amazon-mp3). Rolling Stone
magazine said of the LP: "...That's the
great thing about (Oops...
I Did It Again)... under the cheese surface,
Britney's demand for satisfaction is complex,
fierce and downright scary, making her a true
child of rock & roll tradition."
May 25: Britney appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
June: A Britney Spears Museum
was created in her Louisiana hometown.
June 3: Britney topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week and Internet
Albums chart for 1 week with Oops...
I Did It Again. The LP sold over 1.3 million
copies its first week of release in the US making
it the biggest one-week sales of an LP by a
female artist. Oops...
I Did It Againalso topped the charts in
Austria, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany,
Holland, Hungary, Mexico, the Netherlands,
Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland, and hit the Top
10 in Australia, Finland, Ireland, Japan, New
Zealand, Poland, and the UK.
August: Britney won a Teen Choice
Award for Choice Female Artist.
September 6: The video for "Stronger" was nominated for a MTV Video Music Award for Best Pop Video. At the show, Britney was
most remembered for performing with a giant
snake. Britney came under some controversy when
People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals
(PETA) was not happy with Britney's plans to
perform at the ceremony with 4 cheetahs on stage.
September 13: Britney appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
October 31: Britney could be heard on
the All-Star Tribute benefit
single "What's Going On" (with proceeds going
to AIDS and 9/11 charities).
November: Britney began touring
North America, starting in Miami (after a delayed
beginning due to the flu). Britney canceled a
promotional tour of Europe and South America due
to safety concerns related to recent terrorist
actions.
November 5: Britney released Britney(available for
download at iTunes and Amazon-mp3). Rolling Stone
magazine described the LP as "...by far her
most personable album, the most consistently
playful and the least wince-inducing..."
November 24: Britney topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week and Internet
Albums chart for 1 week with Britney. The LP sold over 740,000
copies its first week of release in the US. Britneyalso topped the
charts in Austria, Canada, Germany, and
Switzerland, and the Top 10 in Australia,
Belgium, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Japan,
Norway, Sweden, and the UK.
December 6: Britney appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
June: Britney was named the
'world's most powerful celebrity' by Forbes
magazine.
July: Britney stirred
controversy in Mexico - first giving the middle
finger to photographers as she arrived to the
country, and then abruptly leaving a concert
performance after 4 songs during her final show
in Mexico. The departure was later blamed on the
weather.
October 31: Britney appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
December:
Britney filed
a lawsuit against the footwear company, Skechers
USA for $1.5 million for breach of contract. The
lawsuit was later settled in 2003.
November 16: Britney released In
The Zone(available for download at
iTunes and Amazon-mp3). Rolling Stone
magazine said of the LP: "...beyond the
glittering beats, Spears sounds about as intimate
as a blowup doll."
December 6: Britney topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week with In
The Zone. The LP sold over 609,000 copies
its first week of release in the US. In
The Zonealso topped the charts in
France, and the Top 10 in Australia, Austria,
Belgium, Canada, Germany, Holland, Hungary,
Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, Sweden, and
Switzerland.
January 3: While having fun in Las
Vegas, Britney unexpectedly got married to a
childhood friend, and then not-so-unexpectedly
had it annulled the next day. The 'marriage'
lasted only 55 hours, and was not technically
considered a marriage.
January 10: Britney hit the Top 40
with "Toxic." The song topped the singles
charts in Australia, Canada, Hungary, Ireland,
Norway, and the UK.
June 8: Britney hurt her knee
while filming her next video and had to have
arthroscopic surgery. The injury resulted in her
'Onyx Hotel Tour' being cancelled.
June 20: Britney topped the UK
singles chart for 1 week with "Everytime."
September 18: Britney got married again
in a secret ceremony. Her hubby would soon be
tagged in the tabloids as 'K-Fed'. A delayed
prenuptial agreement finalization actually meant
the couple were not legally married until October
6th.
September 25: Britney hit the Top 40
with "My Prerogative." The song topped the
singles charts in Finland, Ireland, Italy, and
Norway.
November: Britney won a MTV Europe
Award for Best Female Act.
November 9: Britney released the hits
collection Greatest
Hits: My Prerogative(available for
download at iTunes and Amazon-mp3). The LP topped the charts
in France, Ireland, and Japan, and hit the Top 10
in the US, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada,
Finland, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Italy, the
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Switzerland, and
the UK.
February 17: Britney was fodder for
the tabloids and gossip mongers when she was seen
often partying late into the night. Things came
to a 'head' when Britney was spotted shaving her
head and going in and out of rehab.
September 9: Britney attempted a
'comeback' with the opening performance at the MTV Video Music Awards. The performance was
scorned by critics with Britney appearing out of
shape and unprepared with few dance moves
accompanying the out of sync lip-syncing of her
new single.
September 15: Britney hit the Top 40
with "Gimme More." The song topped the singles
charts in Canada.
October 13: Britney topped the
Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart for 1 week and
Hot Digital Tracks chart for 1 week with "Gimme More."
October 26: Britney released Blackout(available for
download at iTunes and Amazon-mp3). The LP topped the charts
in Canada and Ireland, and hit the Top 10 in the
US, Australia, Austria, France, Germany, Italy,
Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Switzerland, and the
UK.
October 27: Britney topped the
Billboard Hot Dance Airplay chart for 6 weeks
with "Gimme More."
November 17: Britney topped the
Billboard Top Digital Albums chart for 1 week
with Blackout.
December 1: Britney hit the Top 40
with "Piece Of Me." The song topped the singles
charts in Ireland.
December 15: Britney topped the
Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart for 1 week
with "Gimme More."
January 3: Britney's new year
extended her controversial personal life with a
much publicized custody battle resulting in
hospitalization for a day over concerns of
substance use and mental stability.
February 21: Britney appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
March: Britney appeared on the
CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother.
March 8: Britney topped the
Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart for 1 week
with "Piece Of Me."
October 11: Britney hit the Top 40
with "Womanizer." The song topped the singles
charts in Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland,
France, Norway, and Sweden.
October 25: Britney topped the
Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week, Hot Digital Tracks
chart for 2 weeks, and Hot Digital Songs chart
for 2 weeks with "Womanizer."
December 11: Britney appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
December 20: Britney topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week and Top Digital
Albums chart for 1 week with Circus. The LP sold over 505,000
copies its first week of release in the US. Circus also topped the charts in
Canada, Russia, and Switzerland, and the Top 10
in Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium,
France, Germany, Holland, Ireland, Italy, Japan,
Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, and
the UK.
October 10: Britney hit the Top 40
with "3." The song topped the singles
charts in Canada.
October 24: Britney topped the
Billboard Hot 100 chart for 1 week, Hot Digital
Songs chart for 2 weeks, and Hot Digital Tracks
chart for 2 weeks with "3."
January 22: Britney hit the Top 40
with "Hold It Against Me." The song topped the
singles charts in Canada, Denmark, Finland, New
Zealand, and South Korea.
January 29: Britney topped the
Billboard Hot 100 chart for 1 week, Hot Digital
Tracks chart for 1 week, and Hot Digital Songs
chart for 1 week with "Hold It Against Me."
April 9: Britney topped the
Billboard Dance/Electronic Digital Songs chart
with "Till The World Ends."
April 16: Britney topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart and Top Digital Albums
chart with Femme
Fatale.
The LP sold over 276,000 copies its first week of
release in the US. Femme
Fatale
also topped the charts in Australia and Canada,
and the Top 10 in Austria, Belgium, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hungary,
Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway,
Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the UK.
Rolling Stone said of the LP: "Femme
Fatale
may be Britney's best album; certainly it's her
strangest. Conceptually it's straightforward: a
party record packed with sex and sadness..."
