ROCK
ON THE NET:
U2
|
- Paul "Bono"
Hewson, Dave "The Edge" Evans, Adam
Clayton, and Larry Mullen, Jr. U2 came together
in Dublin, Ireland in 1976. The band spent the
end of the 70s finding their
"alternative" niche, gradually rose to
rock super-stardom in the 80s, and continued
their mastery of rock, pop, alternative fusion
into the 90s and beyond. U2 provided rock music
with a message - often on politics and religion.
With large-scale world tours and successful LP
releases, U2 have made
- U2 began in 1976 when 14
year-old Larry Mullen wanted to form a band at
his high school in Dublin, the Mount Temple
School. Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and a guy
named Dick Evans responded to Larry's ad and they
formed a band named 'Feedback.' A year later they
changed their name to 'Hype' and Dick Evans left
the band. With Evans gone, the name was changed
to U2.
- U2 caught a break when they won a
talent contest and were approached by a manager.
An EP called U2:3 was released and
successful in Ireland but the band was not making
much headway elsewhere.
- October 20: U2 signed with Island
Records and released their debut LP, Boy. Produced by Steve
Lillywhite, Boy introduced U2's
sound to America's alternative radio with a
refreshing dose of alternative-rock in a sea of
post-punk synthesizers. The band had a moderate
alternative hit with "I Will Follow."
At the time, Rolling Stone magazine said
of the group: "U2 is talented, charming and
potentially (they're all still under 21)
exceptional."
- October 12: Increasing success in the
U.S. and the UK came with release of October. Produced by Steve
Lillywhite, October contained the
singles "Gloria" and "Fire."
Critics of the LP began to praise The Edge's
guitar style as the potential driving force of
U2's sound.
- February 28: College radio success
turned into rock radio dominance with the release
of War. Produced by Steve
Lillywhite, War presented the band's
harder edge and even harder lyrical preaching.
Tracks such as "New Years Day," "Sunday Bloody
Sunday," and "Two Hearts Beat As
One" became instant rock classics and U2
became known for their live concert performances.
War was ranked # 40 in Rolling
Stone magazine's "100 Best Albums of
the 80s" and said of the LP: "War makes for impressive
listening, but more important, it deals with a
difficult subject in a sensiable way..."
- November 21: U2 released the live LP Under
A Blood Red Sky produced by Jimmy Iovine. The live
performances were taken from the band's
"War" tour recorded in Denver, Boston,
and West Germany.
- September 28: U2 released The
Unforgettable Fire produced by Brian Eno and Daniel
Lanois and had their first major pop hit with
their tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr.,
"Pride (In The Name Of Love)."
- March 14: U2 appeared on the cover
of Rolling Stone.
- June: U2 performed with the
Amnesty International 'A Conspiracy Of Hope'
tour.
- March 9: Bono appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
- November 2: U2 topped the UK singles
chart for 1 week with with "The Fly."
- November 9: U2 topped the Billboard
Modern Rock Tracks chart for 2 weeks with "The Fly."
- November 14: U2 appeared on the cover
of Rolling Stone.
- November 16: U2 hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "The Fly."
- November 18: U2 entered the new decade
with a more electronic sound with the release of Achtung
Baby
produced by Daniel Lanois, Brian Eno, and Steve
Lillywhite.
- The LP was supported with a
worldwide tour called Zoo TV. The band had fun
with their success - mocking the media that made
them famous while using media to incredible
heights to create their tour. The LP sold over 10
million copies world-wide.
- November 30: U2 topped the Billboard
Modern Rock Tracks chart for 9 weeks with "Mysterious Ways."
- April 4: U2 topped the Billboard
Album Rock Tracks chart for 2 weeks and the
Modern Rock Tracks chart for a week with "One."
- October 1: Bono appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
- March 4: Bono appeared on the
cover of Rolling Stone.
- July 6: The electronic sound
continued with the release of Zooropa which followed with the
Zooropa tour. The LP showed U2 declining with
record sales but were still favorites with
critics and longtime fans. The moderate hits U2
had with the LP included "Lemon," "Numb," and (Stay (Faraway, So Close)" and showed U2's
experimental side of music. Entertainment
Weekly called the LP, "U2's most
adventurous outing yet."
- July 17: U2 topped the UK LP chart
for 1 week with Zooropa.
- July 24: U2 hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "Numb."
- July 24: U2 topped the Billboard
200 LP chart for 2 weeks with Zooropa.
- December 11: U2 topped the Billboard
Dance Music Club Play chart for 1 week with
"Lemon."
- March 1: U2 hit the Top 10 with "Discotheque."
- March 4: U2 released Pop which was more
experimental with U2's dance and electronic
tendencies. The band followed up the LP with a
world tour called the 'PopMart Tour', which again
was highly successful. The band had some success
with the tracks, "Discotheque," "Staring At The Sun," "Last Night On Earth," and
"Please." Rolling Stone said
of the LP: "Taken on its own, away from the
chart numbers and the big shtick of PopMart, Pop is simply an album of
great pop. For some reason, for a lot of folks,
that's just not enough."
- March 15: U2 topped the UK LP chart
for 1 week with Pop.
- March 22: U2 hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "Staring At The Sun."
- March 22: U2 topped the Billboard
200 Albums chart for 1 week with Pop.
- March 22: U2 topped the Billboard
Dance Music Club Play chart for 2 weeks with
"Discotheque."
- May 7: Pop was certified platinum.
- May 29: U2 appeared on the cover
of Rolling Stone.
- August: U2's 'PopMart Tour' was
blocked from coming to Dublin, Ireland. The band
was hoping to perform in Dublin at the end of
August, but Ireland's High Court voted to block
the tour because of planing laws. Almost $3
million worth of tickets for the 2 shows were
already sold. Later, the Irish Supreme Court
unanimously ruled that the 'PopMart Tour' could
make a stop in Dublin and U2 played Landsdowne
Road Stadium August 30th and 31st.
- September: A man claiming to have
lost his hearing as a result of a U2 concert was
awarded $34,000 by French courts. The ruling was
against the organizers of a 1993 concert, and not
the band itself. The man reportedly snuck past
security to get a better view of the band and
closer to the speakers.
- After making a
promise on New Years Eve in 1995 to return to
Sarajevo and perform, Bono did just that when U2
returned to the city. The concert event was the
first major concert in Sarajevo since the war
ended. Over 45,000 people attended. "If rock
'n roll music means anything, it's some kind of
liberation...It is about freedom in the
end," Bono proclaimed in 1995. After
stepping off the plane, Bono told reporters:
"It's great to be back. Are we really here?
We've been working for 4 years to come."
After the concert Bono stated, "It was one
of the toughest and one of the sweetest nights of
my life, that's for sure" and told the
concert crowd, "Forget the past, live the
future, viva Sarajevo!"
- April 26: The 200th episode of The
Simpsons featured many guest stars including
U2 and Aerosmith.

with the first arriving stores in November.
- November 10: U2
The Best of 1980-1990 was released with a
limited released second CD of b-sides (U2
The Best of 1980-1990/ The B-Sides). A remake of the b-side
"The
Sweetest Thing" was also released as a single
and hit the Top 40. Bono said of the single:
"It was written during the album sessions
for The
Joshua Tree and it was (his wife's) birthday
and I didn't make it (home) for the birthday...
so I wanted to write her a little sweet song, but
it ended up a little bit sour as all the best
love songs are... I was like, 'I can't write just
straight love songs, they make me want to
throw-up'." The Edge told CMJ Online
that the band won't be touring in support of the
greatest hits release, "...we're, at the
moment, starting to write some songs and consider
going into the studio for our next studio
album."
- November 14: U2
The Best of 1980-1990 topped the UK Albums chart
for 1 week.
- November 14: U2 hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "The Sweetest Thing."
- March 13: The next new material to
be released by U2 was in the form of 7 new tracks
on the soundtrack to The
Million Dollar Hotel with the single "The
Ground Beneath Her Feet." The soundtrack
also features tracks by the 'Million Dollar Hotel
Band' which features Bono on vocals, Daniel
Lanois, Brian Eno, and others.

chart with "Beautiful Day."
- October 28: U2 hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "Beautiful Day."
- October 31: U2 released All
That You Can't Leave Behind. The Edge talked with Rolling
Stone about the future of the band: "As
long as the band is still as hungry as we are and
as long as the music is still with us, we will
continue. If people lost interest, or lost heart,
or just decided that this wasn't really what they
wanted to do, that would be it. I don't think we
would keep going as a way of getting out of the
house or earning a few quid."
- May 8: Bono could be heard on
the soundtrack for the film Moulin
Rouge
doing a T-Rex cover of
"Children Of The Revolution" with Gavin
Friday.

Of"). The band opened the show with a
performance of "Walk On."
- February 27: Bono said at the Grammy Awards: "It's still an
extraordinary thing to behold, the sound of a
rock band in full flight. The promise that your
friendship will survive commerce, being broke,
not being broke, some really lousy haircuts, the
'80s, and that maybe 20 years later you may find
yourself at an awards ceremony with the same
people you started out with and just think, 'Wow'
Thank you so much.'"
