HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE: YEAR
- Fleetwood Mac has seen many
incarnations since its forming in 1967. In all
there have been 15 members: Peter Green, Jeremy
Spencer, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Danny
Kirwan, Christine McVie, Bob Welch, Bob Weston,
Dave Walker, Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie
Nicks, Rick Vito, Billy Burnette, Bekka
Bramlett, and Dave Mason. But it is the
combination of Mick, John, Christine, Stevie and
Lindsey that has allowed Fleetwood Mac to stand
the test of musical time with their historic Rumours.
- Fleetwood Mac was
originally formed as a British blues band in 1967
by guitarist Peter Green, of John
Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Mick Fleetwood
(drums), John McVie (bass), and Jeremy Spencer
(guitarist). Their name came from the names of
Fleetwood and McVie.
- February: Fleetwood Mac released
their first LP, Peter
Green's Fleetwood Mac, and during the same year
McVie married Christine Perfect. Considered to be
a blues recording, the LP was successful for the
band.
- August 23: Mr.
Wonderful, was released. The band had refined
their sound more and added a guitarist, Danny
Kirwan.
- December: Fleetwood Mac had their
first #1 single in Europe with
"Albatross" and released English
Rose.
Fleetwood Mac signed with Warner Brothers.
- September 19: Fleetwood Mac released Then
Play On which contains the
classic, "Oh Well." The LP marked
Fleetwood Mac's emergence into rock (and away
from blues).
- Green left the group after
having a drink spiked with LSD and never fully
recovering. Mick took over as leader of the band.
- August: Christine McVie
(keyboards) joined the band.
- Spencer left the band to
join a religious cult, and Bob Welch
joined the band. The band had now established
their characteristic sound. Kirwan was fired from
the band after problems with drinking and
personal conflicts with the band members. Bob
West and Dave Walker were added to the Fleetwood
Mac line-up.
- October 15: After touring the LP,
Walker left the band and Mystery
To Me
was released with the track
"Hypnotized." During touring, Weston
had an affair with Fleetwood's wife, and was
dropped from the band forcing them to cancel the
remaining tour dates.
- By 1974, only
Fleetwood, Welch, and the McVies' remained in the
band.
- Welch left the band
at the end of the year after problems and
creative differences during touring.
- July 11: After recording for 3
months together, the newly re-vamped Fleetwood
Mac released Fleetwood
Mac
. The band had their first #1, multi-million
selling LP in the U.S., and the hits with
"Rhiannon," "Say You Love
Me," and "Over My Head." Even
though Stevie Nicks made it into the band because
Fleetwood knew he couldn't get Buckingham without
her, she became the star of the band.
- While their success increased,
personal problems were felt within the band. John
and Christine McVie divorced, as did Mick and his
wife, and Lindsey and Stevie broke off a their 7
year relationship.
- April 10: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 40 with "Rhiannon (Will You
Ever Win)."
- July 31: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 40 with "Say You Love
Me."
- January 22: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 40 with "Go Your Own
Way."
- March 9: Rumours was certified platinum.
- March 12: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 10 with "Go Your Own
Way."
- March 24: Fleetwood Mac appeared on
the cover of Rolling Stone.
- April 2: Fleetwood Mac topped the
Billboard Top LPs chart for 31 weeks with Rumours.
- April 30: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 40 with "Dreams."
- May 21: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 10 with "Dreams."
- June 18: Fleetwood Mac topped the
Billboard Hot 100 for 1 week with
"Dreams."
- July 23: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 40 with "Don't Stop."
- August 27: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 10 with "Don't Stop."
- October 29: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 40 with "You Make Loving
Fun."
- December 10: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 10 with "You Make Loving
Fun."
- January 12: Fleetwood Mac appeared on
the cover of Rolling Stone.
- October 12: After extensive touring
and incredible anticipation for a Rumours follow-up, Fleetwood Mac
released a double LP, Tusk. The LP sold over 4
million copies and had two Top 10 hits with
"Tusk" and "Sara", yet many critics felt the LP
was too experimental and the tracks represented
solo contributions, and not a band collaboration.
- October 13: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 40 with "Tusk."
- October 27: Fleetwood Mac hit the
Billboard Top 10 with "Tusk."
- December: Fleetwood Mac hit the Top
40 charts with "Sara."
- February 7: Mick Fleetwood and Stevie
Nicks appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone.
- February 12: Tusk was certified platinum.
- The band fired Mick as manager and
most members released solo LPs.
- July 2: Only Stevie found great
success as a solo artist, and the group reunited
to record their next LP, Mirage.
- July 10: Fleetwood Mac hit the Top 10 with "Hold Me."
- After a short tour
for the LP and success with the new medium of
videos, the band decided to take a break from
each other.
- April 4: Fleetwood Mac hit the ARC Weekly Top 40 with "Big Love."
- April 14: After 5 years of solo
projects, Fleetwood Mac reunited again and
released Tango
In The Night. Fleetwood Mac continued to find
success with their videos, yet were becoming more
popular with adult contemporary crowds with each
LP release.
- August 20: During touring, Lindsey
left the band, and soon after Billy Burnette and
Rick Vito were added to Fleetwood Mac.
- Over the years, Mick
maintained that Fleetwood Mac was not dissolved,
Stevie continually stated that she was done with
the band, and Vito announced that he would leave
the band because of the lack of creative freedom.
- September 12: Nicks and McVie announced
they were leaving the group.
- November 24: A box set of Fleetwood
Mac's achievements and configurations was
released: 25
Years - The Chain. At the same time, Bill Clinton was
using the Fleetwood Mac classic "Don't
Stop" as his campaign song.
- April 16: Burnette left the group
to go country.
- A revamped Fleetwood
Mac emerged with Mick, John, Christine, a
returning Burnette, and new members Bekka
Bramlett and Dave Mason.
- June: Fleetwood Mac returned in
grand style. Commemorating the 20th anniversary
of the classic LP, Rumours, Fleetwood Mac was hard to
miss. The most well-known band configuration
(Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks, Christine
McVie, John McVie, and Mick Fleetwood) reunited
in Los Angeles for an intimate performance.
- August 19: The
Dance,
a recording of their live performance in L.A. was
released and the band toured into the end of the
year. Many have asked, "what prompted the
reunion?" According to Mick Fleetwood, it
wasn't for the money or rejuvenation of fame.
Mick had asked Lindsey to record on his solo LP
and eventually the other members of Fleetwood Mac
were brought in as well. The band members
apparently like working together again and the
music they were creating - and viola, The
Dance
(which featured 4 new songs).
- November: The Fleetwood Mac reunion
tour ended in Maryland. Christine McVie was
reportedly exhausted by the intensity of touring.
Daily Variety has reported that the rest
of the band had wanted to continue touring after
the holidays. The tour had grossed over $36
million from 44 venues. The tour and LP were both
considered financial successes for the band, and
there was talk to take the tour overseas.
- November 7: The
Dance
was certified 2x platinum.
- May: Mick Fleetwood talked
with Atlantic Records about the possibility of
more Fleetwood Mac concerts and/or recordings in
the near future. On future touring, Fleetwood
said: "Lindsey Buckingham has had a dose of
rock 'n roll... he can't wait to get out on the
road... but Christine (McVie) has made it clear
she's not into touring." On the prospects of
new music by the band: "4 of us hope so...
(fans) could all write in... start sending
begging letters to Chris."
- January: When Fleetwood Mac
performed for President Clinton at the White
House, Mick Fleetwood talked about Christine
McVie's absence: "This woman will never
perform with Fleetwood Mac again. Christine does
not have a comfort with traveling and performing
live anymore. I think it is fair to say that this
was sort of an important gig for us, because we
did it without Chris. She'll be missed."
- Fleetwood Mac are
pulling together for another LP. Mick Fleetwood
stated: "There's no shortage of new
material. Lindsey is starting to work through the
songs already -- that's the way we always do it
in Fleetwood Mac. So Stevie and Lindsey are going
to do their solo things this coming summer, and
then it's going to be full tilt into Fleetwood
Mac." Nicks also said she plans on working
on a new Fleetwood Mac LP when her solo tour has
finished. The re-grouping at this time wouldn't
include Christine McVie.
- January 8: Fleetwood Mac topped the
Billboard Rock Albums chart for 3 weeks with Rumours.
- Fleetwood Mac
returned to touring North America (without
Christine McVie).
- It was announced that
Fleetwood Mac would be back with a tour kicking
off in September that will also include Christine
McVie (her return to the group after 16 years).
McVie told Rolling Stone: "About
two years ago. I started to think, "What am
I doing? I really miss that camaraderie with
those four people. I miss everything about
it." I missed the music, to be able to
create again. I couldnt imagine doing it
with anyone besides Fleetwood Mac. I knew that
they were my musical family."
- April 9: It was announced that
Buckingham was fired from Fleetwood Mac due to
disagreements on their upcoming tour. Buckingham
later said of the move: "For me, personally,
probably some of you know that for the last three
months I have sadly taken leave of my band of 43
years, Fleetwood Mac. This was not something that
was really my doing or my choice. I think what
you would say is that there were factions within
the band that had lost their perspective. The
point is that they'd lost their perspective. What
that did was to harm and this is the only
thing I'm really sad about, the rest of it
becomes an opportunity it harmed the
43-year legacy that we had worked so hard to
build, and that legacy was really about rising
above difficulties in order to fulfill one's
higher truth and one's higher destiny."
- December: Buckingham opened up
about his firing from the band last year blaming
the firing on an ultimatum made by Stevie Nicks and describing the current
line up as a 'cover band'.
