Outkast originates from
Atlanta, Georgia and consists of Antwan "Big
Boi" Patton and Andre "Dre"
Benjamin. The duo was signed to LaFace Records
just out of high school and released their first
single "Player's Ball."
September 29: Outkast released Aquemini. The track "Rosa
Parks" was later brought up in a lawsuit by
Rosa Parks over the use of her name (the lawsuit
was later dismissed).
February 3: Outkast topped the
Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks
chart for 1 week, Rap Singles chart for 3 weeks,
and R&B/Hip-Hop Singles Sales chart for 1
week with "Ms. Jackson."
December 4: Outkast released a hits
collection - Big
Boi & Dre Present Outkast - with 3 unreleased
tracks. Outkast asserted that the LP was not
necessarily a hits LP, but a "refresher
course" for their newer fans.
December 31: Critics in Rolling
Stone
named Outkast's "Hey Ya!" as the Best Single and Video
of the year, Speakerboxxxx:
The Love Belowas the Best Album of the
year, and Outkast as the Artist of the year and
Best Hip-Hop Artist. Readers picked "Hey Ya!" as the Best Single and Best
Video, and Outkast as Best Hip-Hop Artist.
December 31: Outkast topped the Billboard Year-End
