Weezer began in 1992 in Los Angeles with members
Rivers Cuomo on vocals and guitar, Patrick Wilson on
drums, Jason Cropper on guitar and backing vocals,
and Matt Sharp on bass and backing vocals. After a
few years of local performing, Weezer was signed by
DGC Records and recorded their debut LP in New York
with Ric Ocasek of The Cars producing. Jason Cropper left
the band during the recording of their debut LP and
was replaced by Brian Bell (the bassist for the group
'Carnival Art'). With their debut LP Weezer and the single "Buddy Holly" getting recognition on the radio
and for its video, Weezer expanded their fanbase and
showed they weren't your typical rock band.
May 10: Weezer released Weezer and first hit alternative
radio with "Undone - The Sweater Song."
Weezer hit the Top 40 with "Buddy Holly."
Weezer was certified gold.

Weezer was certified 2x platinum.
The video for "Buddy Holly" won 4 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Alternative Video, Breakthrough Video, Best Direction (Spike Jonze), and Best Editing (Eric Zumbrunnen), and was also
nominated for Video of the Year.
After going their separate ways for several months
(Cuomo went to Harvard University, Wilson and Sharp
played together in a new band, and Bell returned to a
former band), Weezer regrouped to work on the
sophomore LP.
Weezer released Pinkerton.
Sharp left the group and was replaced by Mikey Welsh.
Cuomo and Welsh teamed up for a few shows in Boston
as the 'Rivers Cuomo Band'.
Weezer was certified 3x platinum.
Weezer started playing 8 dates with the Warped Tour.
Weezer released Weezer
(Green Album).
VH1: 100 Greatest Videos included "Buddy Holly" at # 27.
Welsh was replaced by Scott Shriner
Pinkerton and Weezer
(Green Album) were certified gold.
The video for "Hash Pipe" was nominated for
a MTV Video Music Award for Best
Rock Video.
Weezer
(Green Album) was certified platinum.
Former bassist Matt Sharp sued the group for not
being compensated for cowriting some Weezer songs.
The suit was later settled out of court.
Weezer released Maladroit.
Rolling Stone: The 500
Greatest Albums of All Time included Weezer at # 297.
The DVD Video
Capture Device: Treasures From The Vault 1991-2002 was released.
Maladroit was certified gold.
