- The rock band 3 Doors Down
hail from Escatawpa, Mississippi, and consists of
Brad Arnold on vocals, Todd Harrell on bass, Matt
Roberts on guitar, and Greg Upchurch on drums.
Harrell formed the group in 1996 with Arnold and
Roberts. The trio came up with their name while
in Alabama and saw the partial phrase 'Doors
Down' on a building. 3 Doors Down recorded a few
demos to sell at performances. Their song "Kryptonite" got the band
recognized by record labels as it became a
favorite during performances and a hit with local
radio stations. The group's signing to a label
(Republic Records of Universal Records) came
after a performance at CBGB's in New York. In
1998, Henderson, who had played with Harrell
previously, joined 3 Doors Down.
- March: 3 Doors Down opened for Creed and Sevendust
on tour through May.
- September 9: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for 21
weeks with "Loser."
- September 30: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard Top 40 Mainstream chart for 5 weeks
with "Kryptonite."
- April 7: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for 3
weeks with "Duck And Run."
- May: Arnold was honored with 5
BMI Pop Awards for songwriting and was also named
Songwriter of the Year.
- May: Harrell turned himself
into police in Mississippi for a 'misdemeanor
simple assault' charge after a claim was filed
that Harrell had attacked a man at a party a few
days before.
- August: Harrell was found not
guilty of assault charges in Mississippi.
- May 3: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard Top 40 Mainstream chart for 1 week with
"When I'm Gone."
- March: Harrell was charged with
assault for allegedly punching and kicking a
newspaper deliveryman.
- February 8: 3 Doors Down released Seventeen
Days.
- February 26: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week with Seventeen
Days.
The LP sold over 231,000 copies its first week of
release in the US and also hit the Top 10 in
Canada and Germany.
- September: 3 Doors Down performed on
ReAct Now: Music & Relief - a
benefit program shown on music video channels to
raise money for those affected by Hurricane
Katrina.
- During the year,
drummer Greg Upchurch from Puddle Of Mudd joined the group.
- June 7: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 1 week, the Top Rock
Albums chart for 2 weeks, Top Alternative Albums
chart for 2 weeks, and Top Digital Albums chart
for 1 week with 3
Doors Down. The set sold over 154,000 copies
its first week of release in the US. and also hit
the Top 10 in Canada and Germany.
- June 7: 3
Doors Down was certified gold.
- August 7: 3 Doors Down could be
heard on the AT&T Team USA Soundtrack
compilation with the track "The Champion In
Me."
- August 16: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard Adult Top 40 chart for 3 weeks with
"It's Not My Time."
- August 6: 3 Doors Down topped the
Billboard Rock Albums chart, Hard Rock Albums
chart, and Alternative Albums chart with Time
Of My Life.
- Roberts left the
group due to health issues.
- April 19: Harrell was arrested
after an auto accident which resulted in the
death of the other driver. Harrell faced charges
of vehicular homicide by intoxication.
- February: Harrell was suspended
from the band after he was arrested for DUI.
- August 20: Former guitarist, Matt
Roberts, died at the age of 38.
