Smashing Pumpkins was formed in
Chicago in 1989 as a three man, one woman
group: Billy Corgan (singer/guitarist), James
Iha (guitar), D'arcy Wretzky-Brown (bass),
and Jimmy Chamberlain (drums). Over the
course of 6 six years, they have become one
of the leading alternative bands in the US
and world-wide. Billy Corgan left Chicago for
Florida when he was 19 to work with his band
at that time, the Marked.
After the band got nowhere in
Florida, Corgan returned to Chicago where he
met James Iha and began collaborating. When
D'arcy Wretzky joined Corgan and Iha (after
meeting at a Dan Reed Network
concert), they began calling themselves the
Smashing Pumpkins. As the band began to get
noticed in the Chicago area and opening for Jane's
Addiction, they permanently hired Jimmy
Chamberlain as their drummer.
More local success was found
with the release of their single "I Am
One" and subsequent release of Tristessa.
The Smashing Pumpkins were
signed with Virgin Records, and their LP Gish was released (and
re-issued in 1994). Gish sold over
400,000 copies but success was tempered with
the release of Nirvana's Nevermind, which claimed the
title of "hot alternative release."
However, Spin magazine called Gish, "...the debut
album of the year" in 1991.
Also released was the EP, Lull which contained 4
songs recorded in 1989. The band also toured
with the Red
Hot Chili Peppers during the year.
The band could be heard on the
soundtrack to the film Singles ("Drown").
After a few years of depression
(Corgan), relationship breakups (Iha and
D'arcy), drugs (Chamberlain), the Smashing
Pumpkins released Siamese
Dream. The LP was a major hit with
critics and music fans with such tracks as
"Cherub Rock," "Disarm," and
"Today" being played on modern rock
stations and video channels.
The Smashing Pumpkins could be
heard on the No
Alternative compilation on the
track "Glynis."

# 18
Singles Artist of the Year
The Smashing Pumpkins had a big
year in 1996 and a bad year. On the good
side, Billy Corgan inducted Pink
Floyd into the Rock & Roll Hall
of Fame and the band "appeared" on
the animated series, The Simpsons. Mellon
Collie And The Infinite Sadness kept the
Smashing Pumpkins high on the charts and sold
over 8 million copies in the U.S.
The Smashing Pumpkins topped the
Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart for 2
weeks and the Modern Rock Tracks chart with
"1979."
The band hit the Top
10
with "1979."
A mosh pit accident at one of
their concerts in Dublin left one person dead
and 7 injured. The band has been very vocal
about their opposition to moshing (before and
after the accident), and Billy Corgan once
told a concert crowd: " I just want to
say one thing to you, you young, college
lughead-types. I've been watchin' people like
you sluggin' around other people for seven
years. And you know what? It's the same s---.
I wish you'd understand that in an
environment like this, and in a setting like
this, it's fairly inappropriate and unfair to
the rest of the people around you. I, and we,
publicly take a stand against moshing!"
The Smashing Pumpkins hit the
Top 40 with "Tonight, Tonight."
The band continued touring into
the summer when the hard times began.
Chamberlain was fired from the band after
being arrested for heroin possession (a
temporary keyboardist, Jonathan Melvoin,
Chamberlain was allegedly using heroin with
had died of an overdose). A press release
issued by the band stated, "It is with
great sadness that this morning, Jonathan
Melvoin, who has been touring with our band
as a keyboardist and percussionist for the
past 6 months, passed away from an apparent
drug overdose. Our thoughts and heartfelt
condolences go to his wife and family."
Chamberlain was replaced on the
tour with Matt Walker (of Filter).

The Smashing Pumpkins decided to
settle with the family of Jonathan Melvoin.
The lawsuit claimed that the other band
members failed to make certain Melvoin stayed
off drugs and therefore contributed to his
death. Chamberlain also pleaded guilty to a
reduced charge of disorderly conduct which
allowed him to avoid jail time if he
completed a drug rehabilitation program.
D'arcy described the incident as "...was
like a slap in the face. A big reality check.
We had this incredible realization that we
shouldn't be taking things for granted."
She further stated that Chamberlain's drug
use "...went on in secret behind our
backs. We had already fired Jonathan. He came
back crying, and begged for a second chance
to prove himself. As far as we knew, he was
clean. We liked him a lot, he was a very
sweet guy, and we hired him back...We were
very angry. We deserved a chance to try and
felt we shouldn't be punished for his
stupidity."
The band's new drummer Matt
Walker decided to leave the band to pursue
his own band. Walker, formerly of Filter,
wanted to concentrate on his new rock band, Cupcakes.
In a formal statement, the band said
"Matt is a tremendous talent and we wish
him all the best and much success with his
band. We are grateful that he has helped us
so much."
# 89
Singles Artist of the Year
The Smashing Pumpkins won
another Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance ("The End Is The
Beginning Is The End").
James Iha released a solo LP, Let
It Come Down and told MTV: "People are
just surprised to hear this side of me. I
guess if you follow the things I've written
on Pumpkins' records, it's not really all
that different. It's just that, I guess
people have this image of me with the glammy
make-up and big hair and they just expect,
like, heavy metal or something."
The band's record company,
Virgin Records, filed a lawsuit against the
band for "alleged breach of contract and
non-delivery of albums" (according to Billboard
magazine). The lawsuit claims the band has
only produced 3 of 7 promised albums, and
have reportedly not agreed to provide any
future releases through the Virgin Record
company. The conflict was reportedly resolved
2 weeks later with the Pumpkins agreeing to
provide the record company with a few more
LPs and in return received an increase rate
on royalties.
The Smashing Pumpkins were
denied plans to stage a free 10th anniversary
concert in their hometown Chicago this July
due to crowd concerns. A spokesperson said
"there was just not enough room to
accommodate the size crowd they would
attract." Corgan said the cancellation
was "...one of the biggest heartbreaks
I've ever had in my life." Some of the
profits from the Pumpkin's summer tour will
be going to charities. Corgan stated,
"There's a common feeling that the world
is falling apart, and we're one of the bands
of our generation accused of playing into
that nihilism... I'm sick of being accused of
feeding into that... as a band we've achieved
our wildest dreams. What's important now is
putting our values ahead of our
pockets."
The Smashing Pumpkins released Adore. The band used several
drummers including Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and Joey Waronker,
from Beck's camp. Corgan said
this about Adore's sound on MTV:
"I think people are going to be
surprised by the kind of reversal in a lot of
ways, but the people that say it's acoustic
will be wrong. The people that say it's
electronic will be wrong. The people that say
it's a Pumpkin's record will be wrong."
The band hit the Top 40 with
"Ava Adore."
The Smashing Pumpkins gave a
free outdoor concert in New York City on
Thursday heard on the Internet and 1 song on The
Late Show With David Letterman. About 2
to 3,000 fans showed up for the performance
of 6 songs including their latest single
"Perfect." The following
night appeared in Boston for a charity
concert to raise money for AIDS. The event,
held at the Orpheum Theater, raised over
$100,000 for the Boston Medical Center's
Children's AIDS Program. At the end of the
band's 17-date charity tour it was announced
that over $2.8 million was raised for local
organizations.
The band it the Top 40 with
"Perfect."
The nominations for the European
Music Awards (aka MTV Europe Music Awards)
included the Smashing Pumpkins for Best Rock
Video.
The Smashing Pumpkins were
nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music
Performance (Adore). Corgan was nominated
for Best Rock Song (for Hole's "Celebrity
Skin").
The Smashing Pumpkins launched a
mini-tour in club settings and made it
official and announced on their official
website the return of
drummer Jimmy Chamberlain to the group.
Billy Corgan scored part of the
soundtrack for the film, Stigmata which also included
tracks by David
Bowie and Björk.
Rumors were swirling around that
the Smashing Pumpkins were working on their
next LP as a "power trio" and
bassist D'arcy Wretzky wasn't involved. Soon
after, the band announced that bassist D'arcy
Wretzky officially has left the group for
unknown reasons.
It was officially announced that
Melissa Auf Der Maur had left Hole and
would be temporarily joining the Smashing
Pumpkins for their tour next year.
MTV: 100

The Smashing Pumpkins' manager
of 3 months, Sharon Osbourne, resigned with
many public negative comments about Corgan:
"...I must resign today due to medical
reasons... Billy Corgan was making me
sick!" In January, the band had to
cancel a performance in Belgium because of
throat problems for Corgan.
The Smashing Pumpkins released MACHINA
/ the machines of God with the first video
for the LP "The Everlasting Gaze."
The same month, recent departing member,
D'arcy Wretzky, was in court facing charges
of purchasing crack cocaine in Chicago in
January and was order to attend a drug
education program.
Auf Der Maur talked about
joining the band: "I'm very good at
adapting to very complicated personal
situations. It's part of my personality in
many ways... The Pumpkins opportunity seemed
like a perfect musical thing. More than
anything it's where my bass told me to go. I
needed to play this rock music." Corgan
said of MACHINA
/ the machines of God: "(it) won't suit
everyone's taste. As I like to say, if
everybody likes what you're doing, you're
doing something wrong."
MACHINA
/ the machines of God was certified gold.
Corgan also talked about rumors that the band
may split: "I've never said to anyone
that the band's ending. It's been so
oft-quoted in stories that it's become fact.
Maybe we'll break up just to prove everyone
is right."
Word came that the band was
breaking up - the group will break up after a
string of concert appearances around the
world. Corgan told a radio station that
another LP of unreleased material as well as
live recordings could be released in the
future. He stated: "We thought about
telling people right when (MACHINA
/ the machines of God) was going to come
out, but then we thought it would be all
about that and not about the music. But now
that the album is out, it's fine. We wanted
to make one more album to leave things on a
positive note... It is a weight lifted off my
shoulders. I feel like I've been walking
around with this weird secret. I think deep
down our fans knew that this was the end. If
you really listen to the album, it's in the
album. We brought this thing to what we felt
was a really strong conclusion and it freed
us to enjoy it."
The band won a VH1/Vogue Fashion
Award for Visionary Video ("Stand Inside
Your Love").
The Smashing Pumpkins came in at
# 49 on VH1: 100
Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
The band performed their final 2
concerts in Chicago on November 29th and
December 2nd where Corgan started the show
with the statement - "Welcome to the
last gasp of the Smashing Pumpkins."
Corgan said of the band's end:
"...More than anything the band's
inability to maintain a consistent lineup of
four people is the number one factor why
we're breaking up....The moment we stopped
fighting is the moment that the band began to
end. The moment we stopped fighting for
something better..." Corgan later said
of the break up: "James Iha broke up the
Smashing Pumpkins... Did it help that D'Arcy
was fired for being a mean-spirited drug
addict? No."
Melissa Auf Der Maur won a
Gibson Guitar Award for Best Bassist Female.

Corgan opened up about the break
up of the Smashing Pumpkins: "The truth
of the matter is that James Iha broke up the
Smashing Pumpkins. Not me, not Jimmy
(Chamberlin), but James. Did it help that
D'arcy (Wretzky) was fired for being a
mean-spirited drug addict, who refused to get
help? No, that didn't help keep the band
together, not at all."
Corgan released a book of poetry
- Blinking

of the Past 25 Years chart.
Corgan released The
