TIMELINE

Smashing Pumpkinsbutton.gif (123 bytes) Smashing Pumpkins was formed in Chicago in 1989 as a three man, one woman group: Billy Corgan (singer/guitarist), James Iha (guitar), D'arcy Wretzky-Brown (bass), and Jimmy Chamberlain (drums). Over the course of 6 six years, they have become one of the leading alternative bands in the US and world-wide. Billy Corgan left Chicago for Florida when he was 19 to work with his band at that time, the Marked.

1988...

When D'arcy Wretzky joined Corgan and Iha (after meeting at a Dan Reed Network concert), they began calling themselves the Smashing Pumpkins. As the band began to get noticed in the Chicago area and opening for Jane's Addiction, they permanently hired Jimmy Chamberlain as their drummer.

I've been watchin' people like you sluggin' around other people for seven years. And you know what? It's the same s---. I wish you'd understand that in an environment like this, and in a setting like this, it's fairly inappropriate and unfair to the rest of the people around you. Chamberlain also pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct which allowed him to avoid jail time if he completed a drug rehabilitation program. D'arcy described the incident as "...was like a slap in the face. A big reality check. We had this incredible realization that we shouldn't be taking things for granted." She further stated that Chamberlain's drug use "...went on in secret behind our backs. We had already fired Jonathan. He came back crying, and begged for a second chance to prove himself. As far as we knew, he was clean. We liked him a lot, he was a very sweet guy, and we hired him back...We were very angry. It's just that, I guess people have this image of me with the glammy make-up and big hair and they just expect, like, heavy metal or something."
button.gif (123 bytes) The band's record company, Virgin Records, filed a lawsuit against the band for "alleged breach of contract and non-delivery of albums" (according to Billboard magazine). The lawsuit claims the band has only produced 3 of 7 promised albums, and have reportedly not agreed to provide any future releases through the Virgin Record company. The conflict was reportedly resolved 2 weeks later with the Pumpkins agreeing to provide the record company with a few more LPs and in return received an increase rate on royalties.

May
button.gif (123 bytes) The Smashing Pumpkins were denied plans to stage a free 10th anniversary concert in their hometown Chicago this July due to crowd concerns. A spokesperson said "there was just not enough room to accommodate the size crowd they would attract." Corgan said the cancellation was "...one of the biggest heartbreaks I've ever had in my life." Some of the profits from the Pumpkin's summer tour will be going to charities. Corgan stated, "There's a common feeling that the world is falling apart, and we're one of the bands of our generation accused of playing into that nihilism... I'm sick of being accused of feeding into that... as a band we've achieved our wildest dreams. What's important now is putting our values ahead of our pockets."

June
Smashing Pumpkins - Adorebutton.gif (123 bytes) The Smashing Pumpkins released Adore. The band used several drummers including Matt Cameron of Soundgarden and Joey Waronker, from Beck's camp. Corgan said this about Adore's sound on MTV: "I think people are going to be surprised by the kind of reversal in a lot of ways, but the people that say it's acoustic will be wrong. The people that say it's electronic will be wrong. The people that say it's a Pumpkin's record will be wrong."
button.gif (123 bytes) The band hit the Top 40 with "
Ava Adore."

June

Smashing Pumpkins - MACHINA / the machines of Godbutton.gif (123 bytes) The Smashing Pumpkins released MACHINA / the machines of God with the first video for the LP "The Everlasting Gaze." The same month, recent departing member, D'arcy Wretzky, was in court facing charges of purchasing crack cocaine in Chicago in January and was order to attend a drug education program.

March
button.gif (123 bytes) Auf Der Maur talked about joining the band: "I'm very good at adapting to very complicated personal situations. It's part of my personality in many ways... The Pumpkins opportunity seemed like a perfect musical thing. More than anything it's where my bass told me to go. I needed to play this rock music." Corgan said of
MACHINA / the machines of God: "(it) won't suit everyone's taste. As I like to say, if everybody likes what you're doing, you're doing something wrong."

April
button.gif (123 bytes)
MACHINA / the machines of God was certified gold. Corgan also talked about rumors that the band may split: "I've never said to anyone that the band's ending. It's been so oft-quoted in stories that it's become fact. Maybe we'll break up just to prove everyone is right."

May
button.gif (123 bytes) Word came that the band was breaking up - the group will break up after a string of concert appearances around the world. Corgan told a radio station that another LP of unreleased material as well as live recordings could be released in the future. He stated: "We thought about telling people right when (
MACHINA / the machines of God) was going to come out, but then we thought it would be all about that and not about the music. But now that the album is out, it's fine. We wanted to make one more album to leave things on a positive note... It is a weight lifted off my shoulders. I feel like I've been walking around with this weird secret. I think deep down our fans knew that this was the end. If you really listen to the album, it's in the album. We brought this thing to what we felt was a really strong conclusion and it freed us to enjoy it."

button.gif (123 bytes) Corgan said of the band's end: "...More than anything the band's inability to maintain a consistent lineup of four people is the number one factor why we're breaking up....The moment we stopped fighting is the moment that the band began to end. The moment we stopped fighting for something better..." Corgan later said of the break up: "James Iha broke up the Smashing Pumpkins... Did it help that D'Arcy was fired for being a mean-spirited drug addict? No."
