Kelis (Rogers) hails from New
York City and was born August 21, 1980.
Kelis, born to a Puerto Rican and Chinese
mother and African-American father, began her
singing aspirations as a child with the
Girl's Choir of Harlem. Kelis also attended
private school that introduced her to piano,
violin, and saxophone. Kelis' teen years
included some rebellion including multiple
hair colors, a stint in drama school, and
eventually being kicked out of home by her
parents. Kelis attempted success with a group
called 'BLU (Black Ladies United)' that
resulted in backup singing gigs. Kelis
persisted, with graduating high school and
continuing to focus on a music career, and
was soon introduced to The Neptunes
which eventually led to a
record deal with Virgin Records in 1998.
Kelis released Kaleidoscope with the singles
"Caught Out There," "Good
Stuff," and "Get Along With
You."
The singles failed to make waves
in the US market, but did well
internationally.
Kelis helped out Ol'
Dirty Bastard on his single
"Got Your Money."
Kelis released Wanderland with the single
"Young, Fresh & New" and a duet
with Gwen
Stefani.
Kelis could be heard on the XXX soundtrack with N.E.R.D.
with "Truth Or Dare."
Kelis could be heard on Nas' LP God's
Son with "Hey Nas."
