Coldplay hail from England
and Scotland and consists of Chris Martin on
vocals, Jon Buckland on guitar, Guy Barryman on
bass, and Will Champion on drums. The group met
while students in London in the mid-90s. By 1998,
the group recorded 4 tracks for an EP (Safety)
which led to their first single "Brothers
And Sisters." After another EP (The Blue
Room) and single ("Shiver"),
Coldplay readied the release of their first full
LP.
December 31: Coldplay had the 10th
biggest selling LP of the year -A
Rush Of Blood To The Head- which sold over
2.1 million copies during the year in the US.
June 12: Coldplay
topped the UK LP chart for 4 weeks with X&Y.
June 25: Coldplay
topped the Billboard 200 LP chart for 3 weeks
with X&Y - selling
over 737,000 copies its first week of release in
the US.
July 2: Coldplay performed in
London, England, as part of the worldwide Live 8 concerts. The mission of
the concerts was to raise awareness of the
on-going poverty in Africa and to pressure the G8
leaders to take action by doubling aid, canceling
debt, and delivering trade justice for Africa.
July 2: Coldplay
topped the Billboard Internet Albums chart for 5
weeks with X&Y.
September 10: Coldplay performed on ReAct
Now: Music & Relief - a benefit program
shown on music video channels to raise money for
those affected by Hurricane Katrina.
December 31: Coldplay had the #6
selling LP of 2005 with X&Yselling over 2.6
million copies during the year. The LP was the
best-selling LP of the year worldwide (with 8.3
million copies sold around the world).
July 5: Coldplay topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 2 weeks, Top Internet
Albums chart, Top Digital Albums chart for 3
weeks, Internet Albums chart for 3 weeks, Top
Rock Albums chart for 5 weeks, and Top
Alternative Albums chart for 5 weeks with Viva
La Vida Or Death And All His Friends. The LP sold over 721,000
copies its first week of release in the US.
July 12: Coldplay topped the
Billboard Adult Alternative Songs chart for 11
weeks with "Viva La Vida."
November 12: Coldplay topped the
Billboard 200 chart for 1 week, Top Rock Albums
chart for 1 week, Digital Albums chart for 1
week, Top Internet Albums chart for 1 week, and
Top Alternative Albums chart for 3 weeks with Mylo
Xyloto.
The LP sold over 447,000 copies its first week of
release in the US.
June 7: Coldplay topped the
Billboard 200 LP chart for 2 weeks, Digital
Albums chart for 2 weeks, Internet Albums chart
for 2 weeks, Rock Albums chart for 3 weeks, and
Alternative Albums chart for 3 weeks with Ghost
Stories. The LP sold over 383,000 copies
its first week of release in the US.
July 12: Coldplay topped the
Billboard Dance Club Play Songs chart for 1 week
with "A Sky Full Of Stars."
December 26: Coldplay topped the
Billboard Digital Albums chart for 1 week, Rock
Albums chart for 5 weeks, and Alternative Albums
chart for 5 weeks with A
Head Full Of Dreams.
