Vertical Horizon began as an
acoustic duo in 1991 when Scannell and Kane
began playing together after hooking up at a
club outside Georgetown University in
Washington, DC. Both graduated from
Georgetown and returned to their New England
roots: Scannell was from Massachusetts and
Kane was from Connecticut. Their first summer
together was spent living and working on Cape
Cod.
They saved up enough money to record their
first CD - recorded at Scannell's high
school.
Vertical Horizon independently
released There
& Back Again.
Vertical Horizon remained the
duo of Scannell and Kane, but began to
include more musicians on their recordings
for their next LP - including Carter Beauford
of Dave
Matthews Band.
Vertical Horizon independently
released Running
On Ice.
Ed Toth joined the band as
drummer.
Vertical Horizon released Live
Stages - the LP consisted of a live
performance from a previous September concert
at Ziggy's in North Carolina.
Sean Hurley joined the band on
bass.
