Barenaked Ladies formed in 1988
in Canada, but it took a decade for the band
to really "make it big." The band
originally consisted of founders Ed Robertson
on guitar and Steven Page on guitar, Andrew
Creeggan on keyboards, Jim Creeggan on bass,
and Tyler Stewart on drums. It may have taken
a decade for mainstream audiences to embrace
the Barenaked Ladies with the single "One
Week,"
but critics and devoted fans were Barenaked
Ladies supporters throughout their rise. Part
of the band's on-stage popularity resides in
their habit of changing lyrics during their
concert performances and covering other
artist's work in a Barenaked Ladies style.
The Barenaked Ladies first found
success in Canada with the release of the
single, "Be My Yoko Ono" and was
signed to Sire/Reprise Records the following
year.
The Barenaked Ladies found more
success in Canada with their debut LP, Gordon which hit #1 on the
Canadian LP charts and contained the favorite
"Brian Wilson."
The band also took home the Juno
Award for Group of the Year.
The Barenaked Ladies won a
Canadian Music Video Award for Favorite Group
Video ("Brian Wilson").
The Barenaked Ladies released Maybe
You Should Drive with the popular
tracks "Jane" and "Alternative
Girlfriend."
Andrew Creeggan left the group
to finish college and replaced by Kevin Hearn
on tour (but not on the LPs).
The Barenaked Ladies released
the enhanced EP, Shoebox followed by the March
release of Born
On A Pirate Ship. The band found
moderate success in the U.S. with the track
"My Old Apartment."
The band appeared on the TV
show, Beverly Hills 90210 after
fellow Canadian and big Barenaked Ladies fan,
Jason Priestly, got them the exposure.
The band released Rock
Spectacle - a live LP from '96
performances in Chicago and Montreal.

Singles Artist of the Year
Keyboardist Kevin Hearn was
diagnosed with leukemia and was replaced on
tour with Chris Brown.
The track "Brian
Wilson" started getting airplay.

Spectacle was certified gold.
The Barenaked Ladies hit the Top
10 with their new LP, Stunt, and #1 with their
first single "One
Week"
(in October) - all while appearing during the
summer with the Horde Festival. Robertson
said of the LP: "I certainly hear a
confidence in our writing and playing on (Stunt)... but I think that
stems from natural growth... I think we're
all growing naturally, as writers and
musicians."
Steven Page of the band told CNN
that mainstream success has been
"strange for us - we've kind of been
perpetual underdogs for the last 5 or 6
years, been sort of clawing our way up
here... now we're here, we're like... our
claws are nice and sharp... I don't think
anyone who's seen a show or listened to one
of our records will doubt the musicality of
the band... we just have a lot of fun while
we do it."
The Barenaked Ladies hit the Top
40 with "One
Week."
Gordon was certified gold and
Stunt was certified
platinum.
The band topped the Billboard
Modern Rock Tracks chart with "One
Week."
It was announced that the
Barenaked Ladies were preparing a documentary
directed by Beverly Hills 90210's
Jason Priestly (who also directed the video
for "Old Apartment"). The
documentary showcased the band's recent
touring and public appearances.
Rock
Spectacle was certified platinum.
The band hit the Top
10
with "One
Week."
One of the band members gave a
concert for 1 - a teen with bone cancer who
was unable to attend the band's Detroit
appearance. Ed Robertson visited the teen
after canceling an afternoon of planned
interviews.
The band talked with The
Boston Globe about performing: Steven
Page said, "...people come to us for a
good time and to hear 'up' stuff... I think
crowds leave our concerts really, really
happy.... we're a classic word-of-mouth
band..."
Stunt was certified 2x
platinum.
