The Indigo Girls came together
as a band in 1984 in Georgia and consist of
Amy Ray and Emily Sailers. With a combination
of folk, rock, and alternative sounds, the
Indigo Girls have become one of the most
critically claimed duos of the their genre.
Ray and Sailers first started
their musical journey when playing music
together while still in high school. There
love for music and ear for harmonies
eventually led them to nightclub performances
under the names The B-Band and Sailers and
Ray. While still teenagers, the duo recorded
a tape called Tuesday's Children.
The duo separated for awhile when they headed
off to college (Ray to Nashville and Sailers
to New Orleans), but eventually were together
again as students at Emory University in
Atlanta.
By 1985, the
duo were performing together again and
selected the name Indigo Girls.
In 1986, the
Indigo Girls released a single "Crazy
Game" and their first EP.
By 1987,
they released their debut LP, Strange
Fire. Their efforts made little
impact on the music world but led to a
contract with Epic Records in 1988
(and was re-released in '89).

Buckling under pressure by
"concerned parents," a high school
principal cancelled a free concert in May by
the Indigo Girls in South
Carolina due to their sexuality. Emily
Saliers said of the cancellation and
controversy: "Despite this particular
cancellation, we will play in Columbia, SC
and we'd like to thank the people there and
elsewhere who support our collective message
of respect and justice for all human
beings." A week later another principal
cancelled a concert by the duo because of bad
language in their lyrics - more specifically,
the one offensive word used in "Shame On You." Five students
from the Columbia school were later suspended
for walking out of their classes in protest
of the decision to cancel the concert. A week
later, the ACLU (American Civil Liberties
Union) offered the 5 students free legal
advice. Several other agencies, including
Rock Out Censorship and Artists for a
Hate-Free America also joined forces to
condemn the concert cancellation. The Indigo
Girls once again joined the Lilith Fair tour
on several dates during the summer
