Garbage consists of Shirley
Manson (vocals, guitar), Steve Marker
(guitar, bass), Duke Erikson (guitar,
keyboards), Butch Vig (drums), and new
member, Daniel Shulman (bass). Garbage
developed back in the 80s in Wisconsin even
though the band name nor its members knew it.
Marker, Vig, and Erikson had played together
in various bands for many years. Vig had even
become musically important by producing LPs
for Nirvana (Nevermind)
and Smashing
Pumpkins (Gish).
It wasn't until 1994 that
Shirley Manson joined the band and work on
the first LP continued. Marker had seen
Manson on MTV's 120 Minutes (singing
"Suffocate Me" with Angelfish) and
contacted her about trying out for the group.
Manson grew up in Scotland, and after singing
with a few Scottish bands including Goodbye
Mr. MacKenzie and Angelfish, she came to the
U.S. and hooked up with Garbage. Vig has said
of Manson, "...(she) sometimes sounds
scary, sometimes dreamy, sometimes sexy,
sometimes psychotic... what more could you
ask for?" Erikson said, "when
Shirley arrived, Garbage became a band rather
than just an idea."
