Depeche Mode formed in England in 1980 with Dave
Gahan on lead vocals, Martin Gore on keyboards,
guitar and vocals, Andrew Fletcher on keyboards, and
Vince Clarke on keyboards. Clarke and Fletcher had
previously formed the band 'No Romance In China'
together - then Clarke joined 'French Look' which
also included Martin Gore. The group renamed
themselves 'Composition Of Sound' with Fletcher
joining in. Dave Gahan was brought on board to take
over vocals, and Depeche Mode was formed. The band
rose to fame in the UK and around the world before
making a mark on US radio. Depeche Mode is one of the
few alternative pop bands from the 80's that were
able to stretch their success beyond the 90's.
Depeche Mode released their first single in the UK -
"Dreaming Of Me" (available for download at
iTunes and Amazon-mp3).

UK. It was the only Depeche Mode LP that featured
Vince Clarke as a member of the band and a major
contributor to the LP before he left the band and
formed Yazoo.
Rolling
Stone magazine's review of Speak
& Spell wasn't too kind: "Too often the
synthesizers lock into dead-grooves, and the group's
boyish caroling is anonymous at best."
Clarke left the group and later went on to form Yazoo
with Alison Moyet and Erasure
with Andy Bell.
