 Kate was born in Kent on
July 30, 1958. Kate began songwriting before her
teens and creating demo tapes by age 13. The
tapes made their way through a friend who had
another friend: David Gilmor of Pink Floyd which eventually led to 16
year-old Kate recording another demo and being
signed with EMI Records.
- February 17: Kate released her debut
LP The
Kick Inside. The LP went Top 2 in the UK with
several singles released including "The Man
With The Child In His Eyes," "Them
Heavy People," "Moving,"
"Strange Phenomena", and the UK #1
"Wuthering Heights." The LP failed to
have the same success in the US despite a
performance on Saturday Night Live.
 March 11: Kate topped the UK
Singles chart for 4 weeks with "Wuthering
Heights." Kate had become the first female
artist to top the UK chart with a self-written
song.
- November 12: Kate released Lionheart. The LP hit the Top 10 in
the UK and spawned the singles "Hammer
Horror" and "Wow." Kate would
later say that she was unhappy with this LP due
to feeling it was rushed out to capitalize on her
emerging success.
- December 9: Kate performed "The
Man With The Child In His Eyes" and
"Them Heavy People" on Saturday
Night Live.
   
    
- September 13: Kate released The
Dreaming. The LP was produced entirely by
Kate and hit the Top 3 in the UK. A few singles
from the LP including "The Dreaming"
and "Sat In Your Lap" hit the UK charts
but sales for the LP were less than her previous
releases. Over time, the LP would be viewed more
favorable in retrospective looks at influential
LPs.
     
- November 10: Kate released the
compilation LP The
Whole Story. The LP included Kate's previous
singles that found success in the UK and the new
track "Experiment IV." Kate once again
topped the UK LP chart.
    
- March 2: Kate was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Concept Music
Video (Kate Bush: The Whole Story).
    
- October 16: Kate released The
Sensual World. The LP hit #2 in the UK. Standouts
on the LP included "Love And Anger,"
"This Woman's Work" (later covered by
R&B artists Maxwell), and
"The Sensual World."
 December 9: Kate topped the Billboard
Modern Rock Tracks chart for 3 weeks with
"Love And Anger."
- November 2: Kate released The
Red Shoes. The LP hit #2 in the UK with the
singles "Rubberband Girl," "Eat
The Music," "Moments Of Pleasure,"
"The Red Shoes," and "And So Is
Love."
    
- November 7: Kate released Aerial after a 12 year absence
from the industry. The LP hit the Top 3 on the UK
LP chart.
- May 16: Kate released Director's
Cut.
The set consisted of previous material that was
reconstructed and hit #2 on the UK LP chart. The
LP was her first release on her own record label,
Fish People.
    
- March 8: Kate released the
compilation LP The
Other Sides which contained remixes, b-sides,
and cover versions.
  
- May 23: Kate was honored with the
Outstanding Contribution To British Music award
at the Ivor Novello Awards. She said of the
honor: "It's so special to be thought of as
a songwriter. This means so much to me, I'll
really treasure this."
