On April 6th, country legend
(also called the "first lady of country
music") Tammy Wynette died at the age of
55 in Nashville. Wynette had a history of
battling cancer and reportedly died of a
blood clot while taking a nap. Wynette was
best known for her songs "Stand By Your
Man" and "D-I-V-O-R-C-E" and
in 1992 returned to the pop charts with her
collaboration with The KLF
on "Justified & Ancient." Patty
Loveless said of Wynette,
"...when Tammy opened her mouth, it was
the soul of country music." Wynette is
survived by 6 children and 7 grandchildren.
On April 9th, a memorial service was held for
Tammy Wynette in Nashville, TN. Many of
country music's biggest performers celebrated
Wynette's legacy with words and song. One
performer, Dolly Parton, said, "I feel I
have lost a sister... a friend... and a
wonderful singing partner" and Loretta
Lynn described Wynette as her
"...best girlfriend in country
music."
A tribute LP for Tammy was
released, Tammy
Wynette... Remembered, with contributions by
Elton
John (with his rendition of
"Stand By Your Man"), Melissa
Etheridge, Trisha Yearwood,
Faith Hill, Wynonna,
Rosanne Cash, and others.
Tammy was inducted into the
Country Music Hall of Fame.
