Stone Temple Pilots, consisting of Scott Weiland, Robert DeLeo, Dean DeLeo, and Eric Kretz, emerged with the 'grunge rock' success of the mid-90s. STP formed originally as 'Mighty Joe Young' in California with Weiland on vocals and Robert DeLeo on bass before changing their name to Stone Temple Pilots and adding Robert's brother, Dean, on guitar and Kretz on drums.

Weiland released a solo LP - 12 Bar Blues.

Weiland was arrested in New York for heroin possession (10 packets). Weiland was in the midst of his solo tour in support of his LP, 12 Bar Blues, at the time of the arrest. Weiland had previously been arrested for drug possession in 1995 and last year.

A "bench" warrant for Weiland was issued after he failed to appear in court for a second time to face charges of drug possession. After 2 weeks on the "run" from an arrest warrant, Weiland was arrested in L.A. and released on bail a day later. By the end the month, Weiland was not back in court but in rehab in California instead. Weiland's case was adjourned until November while he undergoes treatment.

Weiland plead guilty to felony heroin possession with a sentence of 3 months at a drug treatment and 3 years probation with random drug testing. Weiland stated he was "...very happy about the opportunity the judge has given me."

Weiland was back in jail for violating his probation.

Weiland was sentenced to a year in jail in California. The judge said in court: "Mr. Weiland has to be punished."

The next Stone Temple Pilots LP, No. 4, was released.

No. 4 topped the Billboard Internet Album Sales chart for a week.

Weiland joined forces with former Guns N' Roses members Slash, Duff McKagan, and Matt Sorum to record soundtrack material for such films as The Hulk and The Italian Job.
Weiland was arrested for drug possession in Los Angeles when cocaine and heroin were found in his BMW. He was soon back in rehab.

Weiland was sentenced to 3 years probation for the May arrest on drug possession.

Weiland was arrested for driving under the influence after being involved in a car accident when Weiland's BMW hit a parked van. He was ordered by a judge into detox immediately for violating probation.

STP released a hits compilation, Thank You.

Weiland was ordered back into drug rehab.

Weiland found success with his new band Velvet Revolver.
Weiland was sentenced to 3 years' probation with accompanying drug treatment and drug testing, for his DUI offense from last year.
At the end of the month, an arrest warrant was put out on Weiland after missing a probation hearing.

• December 3: Scott Weiland died at the age of 48 in Minnesota while on tour with his band 'The Wildabouts'. He was found in cardiac arrest on the tour bus prior to a performance. A medical examiner report stated Weiland died from a toxic mix of drgus including cocaine, alcohol, and ecstacy.
