In November,
Preston was in jail serving a 3-year prison term for
bail violation. Preston was placed on a 5-year
probation after pleading no-contest to assault with a
deadly weapon and cocaine possession in 1992. This
past March, 51-year-old Preston tested positive for
cocaine, thus initiating his current jail term.
Superior Court Judge Bernard J. Kamins told Preston:
"We've got enough famous people 6 feet under the
ground. We don't need to add another one."
Preston is best known for his hits "Nothing From
Nothing" and "Will It Go Round In
Circles" from the early 70s, and his duet with Syreeta,
"With You I'm Born Again" from 1980.
Preston also worked with the Beatles on "Get Back" and
"Don't Let Me Down."
While Preston serves a prison term for
violating probation for possession of cocaine, he's
also been indicted for filing false insurance claims.
Preston and 5 others were indicted for allegedly
collecting over $1 million by staging burglaries,
fires, and auto accidents since 1991. In December,
Preston pleaded guilty to the charges and agreed to
testify against the other defendants.
In May, Preston
was hospitalized with kidney disease.
In January it was reported that
Preston was recovering from a heart infection. On
June 6, Preston died at the age of 59.
In February, Preston was
nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal
Performance

Clapton and Robert Randolph).
