The members of New Kids On The Block - Jordan Knight,
Joe McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Jonathan Knight
(Jordan's brother), and Danny Wood - all hail from
Boston. The group was formed by producer Maurice
Starr after his success with the young boy band New
Edition. The group recorded their first LP
while still in their mid-teens, but with their second
LP, New Kids On The Block became a worldwide
phenomenon selling millions of LPs and topping the
charts. The band's fan base was mostly teenage girls
which left the boys often scorned by critics and with
a fan base that was growing up - resulting in a short
dominance of the charts for a few years.
New Kids On The Block was formed when producer
Maurice Starr was looking to create a 'white version'
of New Edition. Starr held auditions
to form the group with Donnie Wahlberg and his
brother Mark being the first members. Donnie was able
to get his brother's friend Danny Wood involved,
followed by Jordan and Jonathan Knight. Mark Wahlberg
ended up leaving the group because of its impending
'boy band' image and later hit the charts as Marky
Mark & The Funky Bunch before embarking
on a critically acclaimed acting career. Jaime Kelley
was briefly signed on to the group and replaced with
Joey McIntyre (only 12 at the time). The original
name of the group "Nynuk" was changed to
New Kids On The Block.
New Kids On The Block released New
Kids On The Block.
(available for download at ) The LP had little success at
first but ended up selling a few million copies after
the boys hit it big with subsequent releases.
Starr had the boys back in the studio to record their
sophomore LP with attempts at making their music
sound less 'teen pop' and create more of an edge with
their sound.
