k.d. (Kathryn Dawn) lang hails
from Consort, Alberta, Canada, and was born
on November 2, 1961. The uniqueness of k.d.'s
singing style has always left people
wondering how to classify her. Although she
started out on the "country scene,"
her music has touched showcased many musical
styles. The enormity and grandeur of k.d.'s
voice allows her the range of musical
ability, and gives us a compelling admiration
of her sound. For proof of k.d.'s talent, one
would only need to listen to her rendition of
Roy Orbison's "Cryin'" -
quite a step up from her earlier job of
driving a grain truck.
k.d.'s early LPs were
predominantly regarded as country releases: A
Truly Western Experience (1984),
Angel
With A Lariat (1987),
Shadowland (1988),
and Absolute
Torch And Twang (1989).
It was the release of Shadowland that made music lovers
outside the country category begin to take
notice of k.d. and comparisons between k.d.
and Patsy Cline had become very common.
k.d won her first Grammy
Award for Best
Country Vocal Collaboration
("Crying" with Roy Orbison) and was nominated for
Best Country Vocal
Performance - Female ("I'm Down To My Last
Cigarette").
k.d won a Grammy
Award for Best
Country Vocal Performance, Female (Absolute
Torch And Twang) and was nominated for Best
Country Vocal Collaboration ("Sin City"
with Dwight Yoakam) and Best Country Song
(songwriter) ("Luck In My Eyes").

departure away from country music and into a
category of her own. k.d. also achieved pop

"No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)"
for the Coneheads soundtrack.

considering her music was seldom if ever
played on MTV). The video was also nominated
for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.
k.d. was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best
Female Pop Vocal Performance ("Miss
Chatelaine").
k.d.'s highly anticipated
follow-up to Ingenue was released and the
LP was the soundtrack to Even
Cowgirls Get The Blues. The movie was
considered a theatrical and critical flop,
yet to k.d. lang fans it allowed new k.d.
music to be released before the next
"studio" LP.
k.d. topped the Billboard Hot
Dance Music Club Play chart for a week with
"Lifted By Love."
k.d. was
nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with

many tours and contributed to various
television performances.

movie producer, and also appeared on the

out" episode.

takes the credit as a compliment.

deal with your life." The award
"...is presented to an openly lesbian or
gay individual who has achieved excellence in
a specific area of media and has furthered
the visibility and understanding of the
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender
