Janis was born on January
19, 1943 in Texas. She attended Thomas Jefferson
High School where she was often taunted for her
appearance and out-spoken views on racial
equality. Janis enrolled in Lamar State College
of Technology before enrolling at the University
of Texas to study art - it was here she began
playing bluegrass music gigs and dropping out of
college by the end of 1962. By the mid-1960's,
Janis had moved to California to record her music
and was heavily involved in drug use resulting
her return to Texas. Janis was coaxed back to
California in 1966 with the opportunity to be the
new lead singer of the 'Big Brother & The
Holding Company'.
