On October 12th, John Denver died in a single-person
plane crash off the coast of Northern California. The
plane went down about 100 yards off shore into
Monterey Bay from an elevation of about 500 feet. An
autopsy will be performed to determine the exact
identity of the body, but a relative of Denver's
ex-wife is reporting that it was Denver. Denver, a
licensed pilot, was piloting a single-engine,
fiberglass plane alone.
Denver was a highly successful musician in the 70s
with his country/folk/pop music. His success
continued into the 80s and 90s with concert
appearances throughout the U.S. Denver is also noted
for his support of many environmental causes. Denver
is best known for his crossover pop country sound
that included hits such as "Rocky Mountain
High," "Annie's Song," "Sunshine
On My Shoulders," and "Thank God I'm A
Country Boy."
Denver was 53 years old and leaves 3 children. Denver
apparently purchased the experimental fiberglass
plane one day before the fatal crash. It has also
been reported that Denver was flying without a proper
flying license. A medical report that accompanies
licenses was revoked after Denver's two drunk driving
offenses. President Clinton said of Denver: "His
soaring music evoked the grandeur of our landscape
and the simple warmth of human love."
A memorial service for John Denver was held on Oct.
17th in Aurora, Colorado with hundreds of family
members, friends and fans of the singer. As the
mourners entered the church, Denver's music played in
the background. A family friend stated, "his
music sprang from his feelings of love and the world
we live in. Most importantly, his songs resonated
with the people." An additional memorial service
was held Saturday (Oct. 18th) in Aspen. Denver was
cremated in California, and his ashes were brought by
friends to Colorado.
