 Duran Duran started out in
England with Rhodes and John Taylor, along
with Simon Colley and Stephen Duffy in the
late 1970s. The name of the group came from
the Jane Fonda movie Barbarella. By
1979, Colley and Duffy left the group and
were replaced by Andy Wickett and Roger
Taylor. Wickett's stay with the band is
short-lived and Andy Taylor joined the group
as the guitarist after John Taylor switched
to bass.

Simon LeBon joined
Duran Duran as lead vocalist.

 Success for Duran Duran
began in the UK with the release of the
singles "Girls On Film,"
"Planet Earth" and "Careless
Memories," their visionary music videos,
and touring throughout the year. By the end
of the year, their debut LP, Duran
Duran, made the Top 3 in the UK.

 Duran Duran again spent
much of the year touring and hitting the UK
charts with "Hungry Like The Wolf" and "Save A
Prayer." In the US, Duran Duran's
singles had climbed the charts yet, but the
band released Rio and the EP Carnival.

concerts was to raise awareness of the
on-going poverty in Africa and to pressure
the G8 leaders to take action by doubling
aid, canceling debt, and delivering trade
justice for Africa.

It was announced that Andy
Taylor had quit the band.
